I bet that all of you are 15 year old or less. Not a single video game system had 20 "killer apps" in the first year of their life. Not in ANY generation of videogames have you seen more than 2 or 3 great games during the first 6 months. The Xbox360 DIDNT have any "real killer app" until Gears of Wars and that was when the console was 1 year old. The PS3 STILL doesn't have any. And for the future? I can see many games for the Wii. Metroid, Smash and Galaxy are all coming out THIS year. Those 3 if you ask me, will be amazing , million dollar sellers and also if you ask me, are way better than Halo 3 (which will be the only game worthy of competing with Big N's lineup this year). And fyi the Wii is outselling xbox 2:1 and PS3 4:1. That, doesn't sound like a gimmick to me.

ditto couldn't of said it better my self.
Although I do not own any of the next gen console currently,I feel that this topic is a little harsh on Nintendo.Every game console have its own strength, and I doubt any of those features lead their respective consoles to be known as gimmicks.I think the Wii is indeed a very wonderful and innovative console, although I have to say that most of the games made target the younger audiences.I hope that more developers will produce games meant for more mature gamers in the future, fully utilizing the creative controls.I think that at least for now Wii shows us gamers that a console which is deemed as gimmick or last gen console proves that it can be a very successful console as well..
I might get a Wii soon before getting either a PS3 or XBOX 360..

Cheers!
The constant barrage of crappy minigames within games is becoming a gimmick. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Super Monkey Ball.) Games like Metroid Prime 3, though, if done well, will show exactly what the Wii is made for: immersing the player into the game on a level never thought possible, and making it even more fun to boot.
So...minigames=gimmick, great ideas do not.

Here you go, a few mature games for you :
Manhunt 2
Resident Evil: UC
Disaster Day of Crisis
And there are other ports around like godfather, mortal kombat, etc... The great thing about the Wii is that Nintendo is filling up the big gap they had since the N64 which is third party support. The Wii will get many crappy games, many ports same way the PS2 did. But the Wii will also have Nintendo's titles. So yes, there will be games targeted at younger audiences but this time there will be games for adults as well. And that's what Nintendo was missing all along. Nintendo finally has quality (for fans and real gamers) + quantity (young kids, casual gamers, fanboys and people with not so good of a taste in games) and that equals = success.

If they're not older than 15, I don't even want to know how young you are. The Dreamcast had two AAAs and one AAAA on day one. Before the 6 month mark, it had a total of 5 more AAA games to add to its belt, plus many more high AAs.
Game consoles HAVE done better- just because the PS2 won its generation and had a whole year dry spell doesn't make it acceptable.
Do you expect people here to say yes?the_leet_kidThe truth is , yes it may be a gimmick. It is still hard to tell. Give it six more months and we'll know for sure.
the only reason i think its a gimmick is more of the games than the Wii. when i swing a bat or a tennis racket, i dont want to hit the ball everytime, i want it to swing where i swing it. im havent really played any MLB or anything, but this is the impression im getting is that its basically automatic alot of the time. i could give a small flick of the wrist and get a homerun...not working for me.
when games become more realistic in the use of the Wiimote, and please tell me if there are games out or coming out that do so, it will change the way i feel. i own a Wii, more for my g/f than me, and i still need to beat zelda and while rayman was fun, we traded it back.
oh and another thing...stop with the mini-games!!! too many out already and we got the carnival one announced, another rayman, and others. that my friends...is pure gimmick
You didn't think GRAW and Oblivion were killer apps? :? Also personally I care very little for Wii's ''big 3''. I'm 24 and a Wii owner since launch if that makes a difference. But I kinda understand what your trying to get at, except for sales that actually count for very little (otherwise Spiderman 3 should be considered GOTY material for example).I bet that all of you are 15 year old or less. That'll be fun for everybody who can hit an 85 mph changeup over the inside corner. Really. B4 i got the wii i was worried that it was a gimmick. I thought that the hardware probably didn't support a 1:1 relationship between the remote and the game. I was thought that the remote would just act as another button where you could maybe swing up for up down for down etc. That would have been a really lame gimmick. But even the menu scree shows how that is not the case. The wii has the cababilities to support a sword game or a baseball game where the motion of your wiimote would translate 100% into the game. So it's not a gimmick to me, it's the real deal. The only problem is that 1:1 relationships like those would be mostly impossible for just about anyone to have fun with. That's why the wii needs really NEW ideas for games that we can play using the hardware to it's full potential.
Is the ps3's sixaxis motion sensing a gimmick ? YES it is. But when that supper game makes use of it all ps3 fans will support it like sliced bread. Big N made a innovation give it time and don't be surprised if the next X360 has the same controls integrated some how into there consoles, already people are using the wiimote on there pc's. If we could check the emails sony and m$ are getting from users I bet they are all asking for a wii-mote integration some how. And as M$ likes to steal what works for people making them a little different and calling them innovations(LOOK AT VISTA ITS JUST MACOS). I wont be surprised when bill gates uses his X-MOTE to play HALO4.
O and don't forget the gimmick of free on-line play the bigN integrated M$ innovated and sucked all of us into XBox live (if this is not a gimmick what is) !!!!
The only down side I see on the wii is that its underpowered but hell its games are fun. And that you can take to the bank.
After playing Prince of Persia and COD2 on my pc with HD graphics, and then playing them on the wii i can clearly say I had more fun on the wii.
Is that all you have to say !!! wow Fanboys !!!!panosfz6my comment was a joke
I don't care too much what others think of the wonder that is the wii, I love mine and other people can think what they want

Those 3 games are going to be great, no question. But is the Wii going to get any killer apps from a third party? Other than RE4 for the GC, I haven't seen a killer app from a 3rd party for a Nintendo console in a long time.
I have been thinking about buying a Wii recently but I have looked before and there seems to be very little good quality games out and/or coming out for the Wii at the moment. Are there a lot of good games coming out soon? It seems like some of the games that have come out have just been gimmicky to play on the Wii controller and nothing else really.wookieeassassin
Do you own flippin research since you obviously are on this game site....And your topic is just oozing with completely silly comments....Go to the system wars board with this junk.

Fanboy...
I have a Wii and a Xbox 360, both of which I stood in line for on launch day to get. The Xbox 360 does have some "killer apps" but that is because it has been out since 2005. Some of its best games include Oblivion, Gears of War, Call of Duty 2(a launch title by the way...), Crackdown(and a Halo 3 beta), Forza 2, Rainbow Six Vegas, Project Gotham Racing 3, and many more coming this summer. It also has a great selection in Xbox Live arcade, much better than the Virtual Console on the Wii. Some good arcade games include Geometry Wars, Marble Blast Ultra, Uno(With a vision camera), and though many people don't know it, Boom Boom Rocket is one of the best arcade games out there.
The Wii does have some good potential but so far Wii Sports is the most fun I have had with the console. It will probably take awhile for developers to make a really fun game with what the wii can offer. My Wii does not work very well anyway, I can't use the Wii remote to point out something on the screen, it just wobbles around. I don't think it is a gimmick though, seeing as Nintendo stock is now something like $300 a share. :)

1. no one here thinks its a gimmick
2. i actually see that it could be, and am praying for it not to. there are some high-qualty games coming, but there is also a lot of crap
I don't think so. People thought the same way about the DS ... hell, even after I got Mario 64 DS on launch day, I said "Touch screen feels like a gimmick ..." but then Mario Kart DS came out, which is not only greatest racer on a handheld, but probably the greatest Mario Kart on any system ever ... and then Metroid Prime Hunters came out, and people had a multiplayer FPS who's controls and game options nearly rivaled games like Halo ... and that "gimmick" notion quickly wore off. If you know what you're doing, you can make a handheld game on the DS that's BETTER than a console game.
I think we'll find this is the same for Wii. So far we have confused 3rd party developers -- they all poured their support into 360 thinking it would run away with the generation, and some even put tons of money on a PS3 because of how well PS2 had done ... only for them to realize, months late, that Wii is the system people are clamoring for ... so they're making bad games that hardly use the Wii Remote, and those that do don't use it well ... and people are walking away with the feeling that the controller is a gimmick. All it's going to take is for Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and Wi-Fi functionality to come out for people to realize this is a legitametly good and new control scheme.
I think in a year, third party developers will have mastered the remote itself and will be putting out good quality games. It took them a year to get the hang on XBOX 360 ... so the trend is its going to be the same, if not longer, for Wii. But even then, you have tons of functionality in the Wii, like GC compatibility and the Virtual Console, and some massively awesome games like Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and maybe some other games that fit your personal tastes more that make the system worth buying now. Resident Evil 4 and Umbrella Chronicles are going to be coming out soon, exclusives that make good use of the Wii remote ... Godzilla Unleashed will find its only release on a next gen system on the Wii, same as Manhunt 2 ... its just a great time to buy the system.

oh i definitely agree with you there, i shoulda clarified more but i didnt. i know it would be hard if it was completely realistic to the point of being a complete sim. but i hope you get my point, i could flick my wrist just a little and still hit a home run. thats is what makes it a gimmick to me. and in red steel how the sword had predefined motions, animated or w/e you call it i cant think right now im tired. not sure if thats how it is in the final game but i do remember people meantioning it. if i get a sword game i want to be able to move the sword as i please, same with a bat or anything else. thats the purpose of the Wii, otherwise i'd rather spend my time at an arcarde, b/c thats all it will become to me.
i have faith and i think developers need more time, but if i see games a year from now that do the same thing, i will probably consider trading my Wii in.
I wouldn't say the wii is a gimmick. I called it a gamecube with motion controls and a sensor bar. The two best games for it have been what were supposed to be gamecube games. Metroid Prime 3 looks like it could have been done on gamecube, again now with motion controls.
It's doing extremely well so I won't comment on its success but it's quickly losing the hardcore gamer in my opinion. The only thing saving it is super smash bros brawl.
It's gimmicky as hell.
Just walk into your local game store and look at the wall of Wii games. Aside from Paper Mario and Zelda (which, personally I think sucks), there are no games ever looking at. Mario Party 8 just got trashed in the reviews. Infact, most of the reviewed games are averaging around a 6 or 7...crappy. They have nothing right now.
The only reason why the Wii is doing well, is because of its price tag, the side-by-side relase of Zelda and the novelty of motion sensing games (which is slowly wearing off). There is no way that the Wii is going to stand the test of time.
They didn;t even get the VC right. Those games should have bee playable online.

the wii is ok i really like it for multiplayer like bowling but the single player games suck really bad kinda wish i went with a x 360 now... also i have been trying to sell mine but can't find anyone to buy it for what i paid (retail)

I don't care about manhunt..RE and Disaster Day of Crisis look ok..I haven't played a single mario games since super mario world back in my childhood years..I don't know if any of the mario games are decent, but the fact that it appears to be a bit childish..no offence, this is just my personal opinion.I don't know if any of the game will actually appeal to me since I've been playing lots and lots of rpg and action adventure games in the PS2..dragon quest(Wii) may be one of the most promising though, but other than that, maybe zelda or resident evil..the rest,oh well........so back to my view regarding nintendo's games may be childish, anybody care to share your opinion?somehow the world of video game,at least for me,is meant for hardcore and more mature gamer..
I don't think so. It's all about the DS again. Everyone said that the DS will be a flop because it's a gimmick. Guess what, they are kicking a$$ the PSP because it was meant to be for the hardcore gamers to be the kings of gaming. Wii is doing the same thing because the "hardcore gamers" don't accept it. I could say the same thing. Infact, the biggest gimmick ever made is the high definition. Heck, in Japan, the country where the HD is better than here, people don't play on HD. The Wii and the PS2 are still the best console sold there.
Also, tell me what is an hardcore gamer? If it's a gamer that only plays epic and mature games, guess what it's wrong. The future Zack & Wiki (a point-and-click game) on Wii is according to the preview on IGN one of the most hardest game since if you failed on somewhere, you'll have to restart again. Is it hardcore? Yes of me. According to the wannabe hardcore, it's not because the graphics are kiddy. Being an the wannabe hardcore and graphics whore is the worst thing to be. There's no definitions to that term. Also, you should keep in mind that "hardcore gamers" are in minority.
The developers need more time since they were caught off about the success of the Wii. Games are coming that's all I can say about that.
