The title of this post is the one thing i'm most interessted in as far as the Wii U is concerned.

Does anyone know if the Wii U is backwards compatible with both Gamecube and Wii games?

*Nintendo's* gamecube games will be available through the virtual console, but don't expect many if any 3rd party releases. If the N64 virtual console titles are any indication.

Right now, as others said, the Wii U cannot play GameCube games, so, right now, you're probably best finding an actual GameCube and the games as many people got rid of their systems when the Wii was released.

No, the best bet is to find a Wii that has backward compatibility.

That's the cheapest way to play Gamecube game with component cables.

Gamecube games, no

Wii games, however, are backwards compatible (most likely via software emulation to keep costs down).

What Jaysonguy said, I agree with him for once. If you can find a BC Wii, you can enjoy Wii and GCN games on it.

GC games are probably gonna be best played on the gamepad since they will be displayed in native res (the ones that support 480p, I think most 1st party games do). They'll look amazing on that small screen.

If the system can play games from the hard drive, why wouldn't it be able to play them straight from a disc? Is Nintendo trying to force people to download them, or do the mini-discs pose a problem?

The mini-discs will kill its disc drive by getting stuck in there :P

Nonsense. There's been lots of third party SNES and NES games released on VC. Why are you only looking at N64?

No, it's not their native resolution. They are both 480p, but WiiU gamepad is widescreen. GCN 480p was 480 X 640 (4X3 aspect ratio). I had a GCN, and a progressive-scan widescreen t.v., but my old t.v. (an early pro-scan model) could only display progressive scan over the whole screen, so it ended up stretching the picture, which looked terrible.

As you can see there are a lot of GC games which support 480p as well as widescreen so it is not really a concern. Worst case scenario would be adding black bars or stretching the image which, in my opinion, is not a deal breaker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_GameCube_games_with_480p_and_16:9_support On the other hand, if the games you want to play are the RE0 and RE1 games for the GC you can play the Wii versions which have the added benefit of being on a single disc Regards

From that list the only Nintendo games that run in 16:9 are Star fox adventures and super mario strikers. I definitely know that almost no Nintendo made games ran in 16:9, they almost always or always supported 480p though. I hadn't even thought of playing virtual console games on the Wii U gamepad though, that'd be awesome if you actually can.

Yeah but there should be a 1:1 mode in the correct aspect ratio so it's fine, like DS games on 3DS XL.
