Yuo had to download it manually though anyway.Â
for some new games like wii music, it let your music composite with other online players while you are not playing, for wii heathy pack, it let you daily trainning info sent into hospital then feedback to you how is your condition, and a hell lot of online games will use that function. if you think it'll get the wii hot and damage it, don't play any these games gzmask
Or use it and slowly watch artifacts appear in your games for the pleasure.Â

Can you explain this artifacting to me and the symptoms as well? I shut off my WiiConnect24 as well due to the heating and worry of overheating after reading some of the forums. Thanx in advance...

Really, if your Wii is under warranty leave it connected so you can use your warranty is indeed is defective.[QUOTE="tomarlyn"][QUOTE="gzmask"]for some new games like wii music, it let your music composite with other online players while you are not playing, for wii heathy pack, it let you daily trainning info sent into hospital then feedback to you how is your condition, and a hell lot of online games will use that function. if you think it'll get the wii hot and damage it, don't play any these games j03yAsunder

Artifacts are like little graphical errors you see on screen, usually in the form of bright speckles like static, large white fuzzy patches over textures that shouldn't be there, stuff like that, the stuff you get from overheating.

Is this artifacting cuz I see this on my Wii when I play Zelda. I notice flickering on the textures for example the desert at night the ground flickers. Or is that normal? Here's a link of what I'm talking about... http://youtube.com/watch?v=tmHL6cNTdT4

That looks like bad lighting within the actual game to me, but Youtube vids are poor to look at. See if anything strange happens in the rest of your games.Â
Alright, a few questions then.
1. If I leave my Wii OFF, will it not show the new games on the VC?
2. If one of my friends sends me a message while it is off, will I not receive it?
3. Will my friends' miis come into my plaza for the mii parade thing while my Wii is OFF?
4. Can I just manually update?
5. Will standby mode damage it?Â
Alright, a few questions then.
1. If I leave my Wii OFF, will it not show the new games on the VC? The VC list will update itself as normal when you start the Shop Channel.
2. If one of my friends sends me a message while it is off, will I not receive it? You'll get it after you turn your Wii on.
3. Will my friends' miis come into my plaza for the mii parade thing while my Wii is OFF? Yes
4. Can I just manually update? Yes, check the Wii settings.
5. Will standby mode damage it? If you don't use your Wii very often its possible, the fan doesn't kick in to cool it down until you boot it up.

That is an absurd statement. Do you have proof that it damages it? Many computer CPUs and GPUs run consistently at 50C to 60C, and some laptop parts have temperature thresholds of up to 95C (such as a MacBook Pro). Don't you think the engineers at Nintendo have done temperature stress tests, and a slightly warm system is just fine?

My system is getting artifacts and I've read about other people with similar problems. Thats all I'm saying. Â

No sense in sayng that when it is in most apsects not true. It might make a small percentage of wiis hoter than normal, but the rest will only get mildly warm. And damage it? Dude, I thought you were a respected wii forumer on here, but you are spewing off stuff liek some misinformed kid.
it doesnt damage the wii, unless you are one of the rare owners to have a defective wii anyway.

Oh yes, I have heard of this with other people as well. Â it is, however, only affecting the minority. Â When I rudely said "absurd", of course I meant that it is absurd to think that it is affecting everyone. Â You, my friend, are by no means absurd. Â I hope you get your Wii swapped out for a better one. Â Lets also hope that a firmware update will allow the system fan to kick on while the system is in standby!Â

This thread is startign to overreact to the whole topic of overheating. Of all the new systems out, the wii is the least likely to overheat, and on top of that, its made to be on standbye for the very reason to have wii24 on while you're away from the wii.
This artifacting problem is a concern, yes, but to say it is b/c you leave it on standbye too long and thus it causes the overheating is ridiculous. its a very rare problem, and you will most likely not experience it. i think you are weary abotu it for little to no reason and he is just getting you mire worked up than you need to.
One thing that I don't get and has been bugging me for quite some time. Why won't the Weather & News Channel work when Standby mode is turned off? Can't those channels download the necessary information as they are accessed...similar to how the Virtual Console or the Voting channel works? Why do I have to leave Standby Mode on?

shut it, thats only happened to a couple systems. I had mine on standby for 5 months and mine doesn't have a single artifact.Â
If the Wii is not in Standby, Wiiconnect24 is off. This means, weather, news, voting data, emails, etc are not downloaded to your computer. The Wiiconnect24 will not download and install Wii system updates.Â
gooflee
I have Standby Mode/WiiConnect24 turned off for sometime now. I can still get voting data and messages (emails if you like) once I turn my Wii on. Everything works except for Weather & News. Weather & News requires WiiConnect24 to be turned on for some reason. My first thougt was...maybe there's lots of data to download, but that is not the case. If I turn WiiConnect24 back on and immediately go to the weather channel, I can instanteously go in and see all the weather info. There is no wait. So, I see no reason why WiiConnect24 would be a requirement.
look. standby DOES NOT cause overheating. if your console is overheating your either a moron for not giving it ventilation or you console is faulty.theICE_MAN
Mine gets hot when its set up horzontally, the processor keeps running in standby but the fan does not. It never gets hot when its vertical though. And for the guy that says it makes his game disks toasty maybe you should read the manual because your not supposed to leave them in the system when its off or in stanby.
it lets you receive updates, it doesn't actually update it for you
it will go blue, if it's on fully off mode then it will not alert you to messages and updates being received

that's completely untrue. i leave mine on Standby 24/7 to get News Channel and Weather Channel updates, and it is perfectly fine.Â

I'm not trying to annoy anybody :(
My Wii has issues, it has artifacts (nothing too bad but its there), I dabble in overclocking I know how these things happen. The Wii is at its hottest in standby connection mode because there's no active cooling and it annoys me as the only reasonable explanation :PÂ
