is there a special reward for collecting all the star coins in NSMBW?

Does anything cool happen, or should I just not bother with collecting them?

You get an additional Star on your file at the file select screen. If you complete the game 100% and get all 5 stars on your file then they'll sparkle.

Self gratification should be the only reward required.

I agree. Self gratification is in the eye of the beholder. Subject to come with completion of a game, but it would be nice to see a usable bonus, even if it's just something as mundane as the reward for 100% in Vice City. I could care less about sparkling stars seen on a title screen, as do my friends and family.

Oh yeah that's right, I should've mentioned that too :P

I should also mention that if you unlock the Super Guide even once then you'd need to start your file all over, if you want the stars to sparkle. I guess it's the game's way of rewarding people who are good at Mario games.

You get World 9. You don't get anything for getting those coins though except for the stars next to your file.

Getting all the Star Coins has no effect on unlocking World 9. As soon as you beat the game you unlock World 9 regarless of how many Star Coins you've collected or anything else.

Collecting all the Star Coins adds another Star to your file on the file select screen, it also allows you to purchase all the Super Skills videos assuming you've unlocked them all.

However, to unlock worlds 9-1 to 9-8 you need to collect all of the Star Coins in each of the other 8 worlds. For example, collecting all the Star Coins in World 1unlocks 9-1, collecting all the Star Coins in World 2 unlocks 9-2 etc.

So by not bothering to collect the Star Coins, you'll never really finish the game.

Each time you're awarded a star on your file, all the toad houses appear to respawn. However, after obtaining all five stars on your file, the toad houses will still respawn, but they will never despawn. Basically you can use them over and over. Of course by this time, it is kind of pointless.
