Hi there, I'm a proud Wii and PS3 owner and i have to say that Nintendo's new console is about to be another missed shot. Why? First things first. The Wii was a great idea especially mainly with the controller which made games a lot more interactive. And it scared the competition (The PS Move and the Kinect are a living proof of that). But the Wii failed to deliver in 2 aspects: The console could not compete with the far more advanced PS3 and Xbox 360 and the third party catalogue was too weak. But the original concept was (very)good. It was expected that the new version would correct those two first problems. I don't think it will and the concept is, in my opinion, a step back. I can't understand how a gamer is going to play with that massive controller pad in his hands and how that pad is going to be naturally integrated in the gameplay. About the third party installments, news aren't too auspicious to the Nintendo lovers since many games will be left out of the Nintendo catalogue. That might mean something... It remains to be seen and this is an opinion of a mere gamer nothing more but it seems that Nintendo as lost yet another opportunity to reach the frontline occupied by Microsoft and Sony.

The controller is awesome, it might look big or cumbersome but it actually feels great and games control well with it believe it or not. It's very comfortable, to me anyways but I have big hands.

As for the third party support, I think it will be there for a couple years at least until we see what Sony and Xbox actually do. I'm going to wait until we get specifics on their consoles before I give it much thought. You may end up being right.

You do realize the Wii sold more than the other two consoles right?

As for how well the Wii U does, I hope it does well, and I hope the game experiences are different than what you get on the other system. Don't get me wrong, there are some great games on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but last gen, I had more fun with Wii games than I had with 360 games. (yes I have Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, Mass Effects, Batmans, Assassins Creeds, Halos, Fallouts) I just found Wii games to have more personality. My hope is that Wii U games will have more personality as well.

"The console could not compete with the far more advanced PS3 and Xbox 360 and the third party catalogue was too weak"

Yah cause power and HD graphics are what the gaming industry needs....derp. 360 and PS3 went to far. Now they backed themselfs into a corner. They are forced to innovate now which they are incapable of doing. Wii U is a bigger jump for Nintendo then going from PS3 to PS4 and 360 to 720.

"I can't understand how a gamer is going to play with that massive controller pad in his hands and how that pad is going to be naturally integrated in the gameplay."

Gamepad is not MASSIVE, you clearly havent held one. It is light and comfy. Yah bigger then your normal controllers. Weighs the same as an Xbox controller if not lighter. If you cant see the possibilities but hundreds of devs can and millions of fans can then you just are not thinking outside the box.

"3rd parties"

PEOPLE BUY A NINTENDO CONSOLE FOR 1ST PARTY GAMES! PEOPLE GET THAT IN YOUR F-ING HEAD. I personally dont give a rats a$$ about 3rd party games for the most part. There are execptions like the Tales games.

And Wii U will own all the indie devs since they dont get charged to patch their games while Microsoft charges up to $50,000 for a single patch. As for other 3rd parties while some are being cautious like Rockstar dozens and dozens of Devs love the Wii U. Ubisoft is a major player on Wii U for example.

To me it seems you wanted Nintendo to make an Xbox 360...A powerhouse with a "cough better cough" controller. 8th Gen is all about innovation. Which Nintendo has done yet again. While Microsoft and Sony are royally screwed this time. Well...Sony more so but thats cause in 2 years they wont exsist but thats another topic.

In short. Get N or get out.

I personally love the Wii U. I could literally spend the entire 8th generation on just Miiverse talking with peeps. Nintendo has a few hiccups to iron out but thats to be expected.

I disagree. The Wii has the strongest 3rd party catalog of any Nintendo platform since the snes. That merits to a lot.

Can't you just play most Wii U games with a regular controller? I wish I had Wii U, but I don't have any money earmarked towards that. The current price is a bit steep for my current budget too.

Futureshop's ads say the Wii U controller can scan objects, that sounds cool. I'd love to put my face into a game, if they use it for that.

Nintendos biggest mistake was not being a little more risky with the power of the console. Had they charged $399 and increased the power I think there would be less worry of the other two console manufacturers.

be honest with yourselves...the Wii was a fad. As a gaming machine it didnt hold up to the 360 or PS3 there is a reason Nintendo already has a new console. How many of the Wii sales were old people who just bought it for Wii sports. I bet you the Wii sold the most consoles but was by far the least played.

I think the Wii U is different, so far I am really enjoying it and hoping it does well

for the record I own all systems not a fanboy here just sick of sales being used to judge the quality of a product

Quick question...no big deal. But what the f*ck does age have to do with a console being a success? I dont care if your 2 or 80. Doesnt matter. 12 year olds are all on the xbox and PS3 for COD so whats your point.

P.S I played my Wii alot more then my 360 as a whole. But when it comes to most gametime put into 1 game then Halo Reach gets that statistic for me. But I played WAAAAAY more games on Wii and spent more time on the console then on my lol 360. Hell I play my 3DS more then my 360.

Its funny because it's true.

This Gen has went long enough for ppl to forget about the troubles n64 and gamecube had on third parties compared to Wii.

you are the 1% then, haha. Just got a Wii U, I think it's a great system, but the Wii missed out on A LOT of third party games.

The Wii U is HD, has a great online Network and according to Epic it will run Unreal Engine 4 so it should get plenty of third party support. At least it has more of a chance to have more support than previous consoles did.

Well at least i'm happy to brought iup a discussion but let me say that i'm merely expressing my opinion and don't get me wrong, i mean many of my all time favourites are 1st party Nintendo's like Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Trilogy, and the magnificent Super Mario Galaxy (1 & 2) and if you want to talk about thinking out of the box Nintendo is a true contender. That being said i don't see myself playng with that controller. Yes it's new and fun but it will wear out fast IN MY OPINION. Yes i've never held one but i think it will be so. About the 3rd party yes maybe Nintendo Wii had the best 3rd party catalogue ever but it wasn't enough. It was waaayy to short to compete with PS3 and Xbox360. It remains to be seen which games will appear in the Wii U catalogue. Maybe next year will have the answer for that.

The wii was sold but was not played is my point...the 360 is still being played and the Wii is a paperweight and has been for a while other than zelda. Sales numbers dont mean something is better....Bieber sold a lot of albums so by your logic he is the greatest musician of our time. the wii is terrible compared to the 360 and ps3

Wii U is the right choice for nintendo and it is not a miss shot. if this was a competition of graphics well it is a dead end company only the favored will survive. graphics cost alot of money but gameplay don't. Nintendo has turned it around.

Well...the metric of "number of consoles sold" is a good metric because at the end of the day - all 3 console companies make consoles to make money. Additionally, defining which one is better than the other is subjective anyway. Better according to what....hardware specs or expirience it delievers?

Also...Iwata stated in an interview with Digital Trends on July 23rd, 2012, that NIntendo is not competing with M'Soft and Sony directly. They have their own thing going.

Not sure I totally buy that but I think if you read between the lines on that...he is just saying, "we do our own thing regardless of competion..."

I have been a big nintendo fan for years because of the playability of their games but there was one thing I read today that really annoyed me.

Reggie was having this big talk about how profitable the Wii u will be. he mentionned that once anyone buy a game with the system the profit will start rolling in etc..

I mean, back in the days I cannot recall nintendo talking profit on their system just a few days after a system was released. instead the word around would be the big wow factor of their latest games. And now since the Wii was out it feels like we are getting consoles that are just the cheapest deal they could get in order for them to make money from day one. I mean how greedy is that!!?

so yes of course they have thrown a little new technologie in the Wiiu as a minimum so that you don't feel totally ripped of, but in fact the wiiu is just a another cheap piece of underpowered hardware wth a few technologie twist and a lot bugs and problems to be adressed.

So if you ask me Is Wii u the right choice for nintendo? well surely since their goal is making lots of money on people back that are buying their promesses and they succeed.

Personnaly I am dissapointed with the Wii u (and I think the Wii name had to go) why? because its just more of the same. the same concept and gimmick idea that was behind the Wii. So yes its all about exploring new horizon and new ways of playing but the problem is that none of these new ways of playing are ever properly explored and you just end up waiting fo the big hit game that will use the fantastic new way of playing, but It never arrives! and the only thing you do after buying the system is hope that something will come along. (it never did in 5 years of Wii)

So, I kind of have enough of their blue ocean philosophy the big reggie and iwata speeches, the non gamers crowd, the freaking Miis (that are the worst thing ever created) and all the rest. thats not the Nintendo I used to know.

In general i agree with your opinion. The fact that Nintendo launches in the market a cheap product that follows a good concept (wii) but doesn't deliver what would be expected. Well in termos of profiting let's not forget that bthis is an industry like any other and the main goal is the maximum profit with the least costs to the shareholders but that does not mean that they can't make a good product and what i want to say is that Wii U is NOT that product. Oh totally with you with those annoying and horrible Mii's...

I'm usually pro-Nintendo but I have to admit that, in some ways, they are a little backwards sometimes.

For example their hardware tends to be bottlenecked by some dumb decisions (cartridges on N64, mini-DVD on NGC, generally weak hardware on Wii and, as it seems, weak CPU on Wii U now), they don't want to embrace some things (for example online gaming), they generally didn't cooperate enough with 3rd parties (untill it wasn't too late), the censorship in 16-bit era (may not matter today but anyway), not willing to bring back the games that fans would love to see (F-Zero, Star Fox, Earthbound, ect.) and so on.

And it's really a shame because they could easily be the best console company of them all if they sorted out the issues and got back the 3rd party support they lost during the N64 era (cartridges, hard to program for).

Time will tell how Wii U will fare (hopefully well, both, sales and games wise).

Controller is awesome I've held it for hours no more or less cumbersome than my dualshock 3... No one buys Nintendo for 3rd party games... However I do hope it gets some good rpgs it seems that ps2 was the last great rpg console...
