I remember him first unveiling the new system and the first thing he said about it was that, "When you first turn on the system and see the graphics, you will say wow!"

I wonder if at the time they had a different conception of  how much horsepower they would give the Wii back two years ago.

You can go on youtube.com and look at the video yourself.

They didn't, it was damage control. The Wii was originally planned to cost US$100 (so they never planned HD or whatsoever), but controller development increased its price.

Maybe you should learn that wow as in the whole wii package. People do go wow when the wii is turned on for the first time and people start playing wii sports. They don't give a rat's butt about the graphics because to them they are enjoying the game more.

As for the originally cost 100 dollars please find me a damn Nintendo statement confirming that because the parts don't cost more then that for each wii. It's a fracking myth the wii was originally going to be a 100 dollar console. Instead Nintendo was going to make a HD console but their own research showed that would have been a disaster because it certaintly hasn't helped Microsoft that much nor the PS3. More and more gamers were dropping out of the console gaming scence. Any new gamers were the children of existing gamers which was shrinking in Japan and starting to show signs in the states. Atari generation there were a lot more console gamers then today's generation. 30 million console gamers left. You find tons more people at college and high school level and beyond who admitted that the last console they played was in the SNES era then admitting to being current console gamers.  People couldn't come into the field because the controllers confused them. HD graphics were not impressive to them. Also the controller was developed for the gamecube late in it's life then refined for the wii.

HD being added would have made the console cost far more and alienated the market Nintendo was trying to grab and has successfully grabbed. HD has turned off far more potential console buyers then lack of HD has.

Even developers are wary of HD because it inflates the cost of game development dramatically since all the added graphic effects cannot be seen on the tvs most people have. In five or six years when the new Nintendo console comes out HD development tools will have lowered the development costs and times to make it more affordable and desirable for most developers.

Here is another thing Nongamers think the Wii graphics look better then the PS3 they admit the wii is more fun while the PS3 just bores them.

When I look at Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime Corruption I say Wow! We still haven't seen the start of what the Wii is about yet.

Some PS2 games will make you say WOW. His comment was, as Wintry stated, eloquently executed damage control.
