here is a statement made by capcom talking about Monster hunter coming to the west

"It's something that we're looking into at the moment and there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, Monster Hunter isn't as popular in the West, so it might put people off. Secondly, Japan doesn't have Friend Codes, so Capcom run all the servers and the monthly fee is essentially to pay for those costs."

Actually, this is quite a misleading title. I do not care about Monster Hunter nonsense, rather I was excited that Nintendo might be doing away with friend codes. Way to get my hopes up, dude.

It is misleading. You should have said: "Japanese version of Monster Hunter does not have friend codes". Your title implies every Wii in Japan doesn't use friend codes.

Anyway, this news is old. This is why it's always been a Pay to Play game, at least in Japan.

only MH3 doesn't use friend codes... that's why they run their own servers.. and that's why japanese players have to pay them.... well that's for japan.. seeing as capcom wants to make MH popular in the US... they might bring it to us with F2P online... and maybe they can be risky and run their own servers too without having us pay them, thus also eliminating the use of friend codes.... ....wishful thinking.....

Um... it's simple. If a dev uses Nintendo's way of running the online features for multiplayer, it implies usage of friend codes to manage things. If a dev, like EA, wants to run their own servers and net code for a Wii game, then they don't have to subscribe to that. It's the same as what happens when you make a program in XNA that you want to work online. If you use Microsoft's facilities, then you'd have to have at least a Live account, if not a creator's club paid membership for everyone connecting. But part of what I did for one of the classes I was working with this stuff in, was to make a server (in Python, no less) to circumvent that.

The topic title is not misleading at all.... the TC is quoting some one as saying "Japan doesn't have Friend Codes". I think where the confusion comes in is that the TC may have thought the guy he quoted meant the Wii itself has no friend codes in Japan, where as the actual statement was only pertaining to Monster Hunter 3.

Leaving out "for Monster Hunter 3" is a pretty good reason to be annoyed.

Yeah, but I don't think the TC realized that the "Japan doesn't have friend codes" line from the quote only applied to MH3. I think he misunderstood the quote, thought it meant that there were no friend codes in Japan at all, and made this post. So yeah, not misleading... just wrong.

LMAO @ the posters in this thread. I feel bad for you, TC, that you had to deal with this nonsense.
