Was wondering if there is a difference between the Japanese market DS lite compared to the US version? I was just in Japan the end of last year and should have purchased one but decided not to. Can you let me know if there is a difference? Will the US DS play all of the Japanese games? Any other info would be appreciated. Thanks

All DS models are the same, I'm sure, and is region free.
That means you can play any DS game on any DS system.
The only difference is the recharge thingy.

After using a couple models from different regions and build dates, no, they're not the same.

The most striking difference between EU and JP is the screen's refresh rate. The EU ones have awful ghosting. Most people don't notice it, but I'm pretty sensitive to it and games like Bleach DS are almost unplayable on an EU DS. However the early EU models didn't have the problem- I think they got downgraded somewhere along the line... Europe has low standards, apparently. :roll Also the JP model feels "tougher", the buttons have a little more click to them and touching the screen is more of a "tap" than a press. Hard to explain.

I could be wrong though, need to test a bit more but they're definitely not the same.

While this isn't about the US one I'm just saying there are differences between regions.

Is there a reason you want a Japanese DS Lite?

Mainly for reading all of the Japanese writing characters. Its been so long since I've kept up that I figured if the text was in Japanese characters it would help me keep up my reading skills. I know there are educational games you can buy for this as well. Thats another thing, what educational japanese text games are there? I've seen some for kanji. Is there one for all three formats? Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji? I'm new to the whole ds system so maybe I don't need the Japan version. Let me know. Thanks

Just buy the DS lite of your native country and buy Japanese games for it... Not like having the system in Japanese is going to make the games display Japanese text...

You can also set the language on the DS at start up.
The DS has Enligsh, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese to choose from.
BUT this will not affect games. If you buy a Japanese game, it will be in Japanese. If you buy a US game, it will be in English.

Also to Banoffee, I think that all depends on the DS itself. I have my friend's Onyx DS Lite and it is alot brighter and has better buttons than my White DS Lite. Plus both systems only need a tap for the touch screen.

I do believe that there are games that focus on both kanji and hirigana etc, however kanji is the most heavily focused on. Check out play asia, they might have some of the games.
