I agree that Red Steel is better than most people claim. Gamespot gave us a good review of Zelda, and I think it's pretty spot on. It's a great game, but it's not worthy of its own shrine or anything.
A lot of good points and then...I know there are other people that hate the game but from what you said it seems like you only played the game for the first couple of levels, which is kinda sad to make a judgement based on that.CLeRKSfan4life
Exactly. I borrowed Red Steel from my brother just so I could have an honest opinion about it. I got sick of the constant bashing of the game when most of it seemed a little under-informed. Red Steel is one of those games that gets better as you get farther into it. The levels get to be pretty cool and more detailed overall. The end of the factory level is awesome, for example.
I haven't beaten it yet, but I'm very close, possibly on the last level. The story is pretty stale, unfortunately. I really don't care what happens to Scott or his girlfriend. And the voice acting is annoyingly bad. In general, the presentation is the worst part of the game.
But the gameplay itself isn't nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. The FPS controls are simple and precise. As with all Wii controls, it takes some time to get used to. The AI is good; enemies hide behind whatever they can. I've even seen a couple guys exit a room when I start shooting and end up circling around and coming up behind me.
The sword-fighting is the only part of the gameplay that kind of sucks. The more difficult enemies block almost everything, and at some points you just need to get lucky. I'd rather have sword fights for bosses only. There's one level where you fight a boss then another ninja lackey appears immediately after for no reason, and he's harder than the boss. The sword fights are more frustrating than fun.
But I have no problems whatsoever with the FPS controls. Head shots are easy, the focus time feature is pretty cool, and it's good to see a game that rewards you for not killing your enemies. But it still gives you the option of executing them if you're pissed off.
