Wow this is... I never, I've never played this game in my life. Why do I feel nostalgic and a sense of deja vu? Well I sort of know why, but anyways:

I don't know about the popularity of this YS series, and what order the games are in, or what everything is all about. It's not like Final Fantasy, which are separate installments, or the Tales of games, or the Star Ocean series, which are somewhat connected.

Plus this game hasn't received much attention and I'm interested to know what great places to level up, what kind of game it is in terms of linearity, and if anyone is familiar to this series. I... really like it from the first 10 minutes I've played. There's just something... so familiar about the experience you know?

Anyone know a good place to talk about this game? The game-specific board for it is kind of inactive, and I want fans of the series who are pretty familiar with the entire mechanics. Shame GameSpot didn't bother with this game, I would really like to see what they thought of it.

Oh and, I almost forgot: This game came in a box with what seems to be a compact disc. The box says that this is a "music CD". What do I do with it? That is to say, how do I activate the music it has stored?

If it's a music CD, why not try inserting it into CD player? Also it's an Action RPG in a similiar way to Secret of Mana etc.

I've heard it compared to Legend of Zelda before, if that helps any. And as for the music CD....you should be able to figure that out.

A niche ARPG series

that doesn't get much love in the west. Case in point: PSP remakes in Japan/Ys 7

Ooh, ooh! I played through this game. I gave it a 4.5 rating. It is a lot like The Legend of Zelda though nowhere near as good. I suggest using the Walk Through available here at Game Spot. I would have had no clue what to do without it. I liked the first book a lot more than the second. Fire magic pretty much eliminated swordsplay in the second book. The game specific forum did not have a lot of new posts being put up when I was checking it as I played through the game but I always got rather expedient answers to questions that I posted, so do not let the apparent inactivity fool you. The people who responded were very knowledgable of the game series as well. I hope you have fun playing through it.

He gave Sonic: Dark Brotherhood an 8/10. That's actually close to the average critic and user reviews, though. I've been interested in the Ys games, but I'm buried in dungeon crawlers and action rpgs right now.

Ancient Land of Ys Forum

All about Ys series shrine

Ahh, one of my favorite series.

Its a niche ARPG series from Japan and developed by a fairly old dev, Nihon Falcom, who mainly dev JRPGs.

Ys is fairly popular in Japan mainly for its intense action and intense soundtracks, composed by the immensely praise JDK Fallcom Soundteam.

Its not until entry VI though that Ys got a name for being probably the most fast paced action RPG out there, as the bump attack mechanic was completely dropped and standard attacking wth buttons and magic combos were introduced. The series has cotinued to succeed and provide over the top action.

To give you an idea of how the newer games are...

Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim

Ys 0: Origins

Ys III: Oath in Felghana (Remake of the original 3rd installment)

Ys VII

The games themselves are all connected, either direct prequels or sequels.

Unfortunately its not too popular in the US but it is a great series, more people should get into it.

Food for thought: Ys Book I&II was Electronic Gamer Monthy Magazines first 10 score game.

So knowing the chronology of the games... Where do Books 1 & 2 fall in? The first of the series?

Ys Origins being ys Zero would be first, Ys I&II 2nd and 3rd, IV is 4th, III is 5th, V is 6th, VI is 7th, VII is 8th.

I've heard it compared to Legend of Zelda before, if that helps any.

The Zelda similarity it holds is the dungeon progression formula.

Item based dungeon progression and dungeon>Field>Dungeon>Field pattern.

I can live with that. :) If only I could find it local for less than 35$...FYE has it newfor 20$ online, but 35 for it used and in-store.

My experience with Ys is limited to Book 1 and 2, which I played on the Turbo Duo. The music is noteworthy, not just because it's fantastic, but because it was composed by Yuzo Koshiro.

King9999

My favorite composer. He's done some fantastic recent work with Etrian Odyssey I-III and 7th Dragon.

These games any good? Been on the fence for years regarding Ys. Being a Mana/Zelda fan, I'm wondering whether or not to purchase the DS remakes. Are they worth it?

Im a huge JRPG fan, huge, and Ys is probably my favorite JRPG series. One half of the series is a fast paced action RPG/Zelda type series and the second half is intense over the top action RPG/platformers. Check out my previous post for video to some of the games to see what you could be missing.

I'll check out the DS remakes and see if I can find Ark of Napishtim somewhere. From the screenies and videos I've seen and you posted, looks very interesting. Been needing a new JRPG for awhile now anyway. Thanks. :) Is the Windows 98 version easy to find/download legally?

I do believe thatthe Wii's Virtual Consolehas Books 1+2 on there, although because they're the originals, they look very dated compared to the remake.
