Lets admit it, Red Steel isn't as bad as people like to make out

I never remembered it being as bad as people say, so I decided to go back and play it, and see if it is really crap and I was just enjoying the novelty of the controls a little too much at the time.

Conclusion is, people want a game to point the finger at and laugh at. The game isn't that bad at all. Firstly, people keep complaining about the graphics... um, you can't just complain about graphics because you don't like the gameplay, they're two different things. This game looks better then the vast majority of Wii games out now, it has god rays ffs, the NPC's can run through streams of light and create crysis style rays, something I've not seen in a Wii game since. I think at the time everyone was expecting the console to look like the 360 and PS3, and never went back and considered that fact they were being way too harsh.

Also, the controls arn't that bad, it has Z-axis (pulling and pushing the remote toward the screen) down better then nearly any game I've played, the "bullet time" style shooting out of peoples hands thing is fun too. In fact, the only thing wrong with the controls is the huge dead-zone. But they designed the combat around that, with most shooting scenes not requiring the player to turn overly much.

People should probably go back and try this game again, dunno why it got such a bad rep, but it sure doesn't deserve it.

Nah, the first Red Steel was terrible. Considering the game was using sword play and gun play whenever you want .. yet it was scripted. Also the gun play was terrible and jittery - I want to know who the idiot is that thought moving the wiimote forward to zoom in to aim was a good idea. Hm what else was bad, oh, the graphics were pretty mediocre, the voice acting was really, really awful... I guess the only good thing was the music.

the graphics are some of the best on the Wii... just playing through it again now, I've not seen any other games on the Wii which impliment god rays. And yeah the gunplay isn't jittery at all, the cursor is slowish, but not jittery. The forward/backward zooming works fine, I haven't had any problems with it, just push forward to zoom in, or push forward quickly to go into the special slow-mo thing.

Okay, the game is functional, you can play it .. everything works, though that doesn't mean it's designed well. The pushing the wiimote forward to zoom in is a really poor design choice and the bound box for the shooting is horrible compared to something like Metroid Prime 3. As for the graphics, lets agree to disagree lol.

That game was awful at launch, let it die. Play MP3 for a bit then go back and play RS, then tell me RS isn't a pile of crap :| its easily the worst game I own across all platforms this gen.

i liked the whole zooming in by moccing the wiimote forward thing.....i think it s shame more games dont use it. as for the game....i think it was one of the most ambitous games we have seen this gen. there are more ideas in it in the first 10 minuets than most franchises have over several games. unfortunately the executiuon left alot to be desired. i think the dev just tried to do too many new things while dealing with a new console and a new control scheme and getting it ready to launch with the wii. its not a dreadful game..ive played worse this gen. but its not something id recommend to a friend either.....the wii has loads of better games.

The sword fighting makes it terrible, but the rest wasn't that bad for its time. Aiming has been improved in other games since then of course, but I never had any real issues with it anyway. The slowmo was fun, the missions were decent but not really memorable.... I really only remember the sword fights because they were so annoying and frustrating and awful.

Also, splitscreen multiplayer was fun.

Sword fighting wasnt great but I loved it. I liked the shooting mechanics and found it fun blasting through a room with my uzi's blazing. It also had that cheap movie cheesiness that I thought was cool. Im excited for the 2nd one but also skeptical.

Yeah some people really over exaggerate. With a little more polish it could have been a very good game. The only thing that really broke the game was the sluggish and sometimes jittery aiming (glitches) and spotty graphics. Truthfully, I think Red Steel is one of the best looking games too. It is just that some areas of the game look like an N64 game, while other areas just look really good (the last stage comes to mind and that Geisha level looks good, and so did that funhouse level). Environmental destruction was pretty good too.

I think Jordan's got it dead-on. The sword fighting needed some real work. So often skill wasn't rewarded, and I felt like I did better just waving the remote across the screen as fast as I could. The shooting was fine. Multiplayer was pretty good, as well. One of few local multiplayer FPS experiences on the system. Mostly, Red Steel has become the launch game that's cool to hate, and is stuck with that reputation now.

I thought the graphics were normal wii graphics. I had some trouble with the controls but not much, I thought it was kinda fun, but I would reccomend to people this as a rental, or bought with the no more heroes pack.

The game is not good, but it's not bad either. With the price of the game nowadays, it's definetly worth the buy.

Yeah that game is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Its not the best game ever by an stretch of the imagination, its not even one of the Wii's best games, but it was OK. The shooting was pretty fun, especially with the destructible environments, it was fun to just light the place up lol and it had an amazing soundtrack. It also had some nice environments from time to time. What held it back was the pacing of the swordfights and the fact that like someone said, using the special moves and such were pointless, it was rare when you couldn't just keep swiping the controller randomly and win.

It's a huge improvement over the first. Not to mention the graphics are pretty much one of the best on the Wii.

I had fun with it too. Great Soundtrack, partially impressive graphics.

Still, I can't deny that it's rushed and definitely not one of the better Wii games all in all.

The first Red Steel wasnt terrible. It just didnt live up to the hype that it had. and when games flop like that, no matter how medicore of a game it was, it wasnt as good as we wanted, so it got trashed on. Personally, i replayed it a few times, and it was a fun expierence that you couldnt get on other systems(even if it wasnt as good as it could have been)

Wait.. you're talking about RS1, right? Because, uh, no.. I thought it was horrible. In fact, one of the very worst games I own this gen. The shooting was crap, especially compared to newer Wii FPS. The sword-fighting was awful. The middle third of the game, with all the random missions, nearly bored me into a coma. The glitches (including one that completely froze my Wii and TV so that I had to unplug the power) crippled segments of gameplay. And what was up with some of those levels? I mean, fighting men dressed as women and bunnies? A car-wash fight? The local multiplayer was solid, but that's about the only good thing I'll say.

It's over hated, but it's still a really bad game.

I would like a remake of the first, with the second's engine. I want to play the first, but the controls are so bad.

you know, as bad as the game was (and it was) I felt compeled to keep playing it to the end. It was like a really cheesy B movie that's so bad it makes it a little better.
