The reason most Wii games are toony is because that style is better suited for the Wii's hardware. You have to remember that the Wii isnt a graphical powerhouse, and pushing realistic graphics is quite difficult. Its unusual with the wii because it technically is an overclocked GC, and that slight increase in speed doesnt give much of a graphical boost. So trying to make a realistic zelda game again would look very similar to TP, maybe a little better.
OMG this is a hard question. I like that they switch it up and choose different styles based on the age of Link and the world around him. toon link fit young link and the ocean feel and the style of that game, but toon would have made TP horrible. I think the new link is a refeshing blend and fits its own vibe. It is so hard to say, so I did not :P.
But then you could look at all the success it's getting from it's recent endeavors. Why go back even if they have an HD console? Their top sellers - Mii, Mario, Link, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Kirby, etc - all fit the bill for toony designs. I'd be willing to bet that Metroid would get the most significant benefit from an HD console than either Mario or Zelda. The reason most Wii games are toony is because that style is better suited for the Wii's hardware. Does anyone else see how the new zelda looked like a n64 game on the E3 showing, or how crappy the controls were?? 1:1 movement my a$$, it's just pre-set moves like tp, but only more different animations...
And a whip!? Really?? What, Link is suddenly into SM now?? I can see how Miyamoto likes to put his real life hobbies in games...
Oh and to answer the on-topic question: I like Adult Link best, cause you know... he looks like a human being...

Ummm, I am at a loss for words. If you think this games graphics are bad for the Wii then you have problems plain and simple. The motion of the sword is 1:1 until you swing it, then it goes in the same direction (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and the same direction, such as top to bottom or bottom to top). People need to stop complaining about the whip. Does mario look like a human being? no he looks F'd up. Are his games awesome? yes indeed they are!
I don't think Nintendo thinks like that, I think they match the visual style with the gameplay and theme of the game. Twilight Princess had a very dark fantasy story, your not going to sell that with Wind Waker like visuals. Wind Waker was like a childish adventure with the talking boat and all that stuff, it was like the Never Ending Story a little, the look definitely fit the theme. The visual style for Skyward Sword is more in line with the older games than with Wind Waker. SepewrathTrue. I guess that would be a bit awkward for Nintendo to completely abandon what made the Zelda we know so well. I imagine, though, that maybe their has been a shift towards that cartoony side. I'm not saying intentionally, but so far it looks like it has more appeal. Perhaps the adult Link will become the what Toon Link used to be?
I don't know how Other M fits into that whole theory lol. You got Samus putting dudes in headlocks and shooting them in the face. SepewrathYea I thought about that, but what I'm saying is that it looks a little more "toony" than other Metroid games, the most recent ones moreso than the rest.
Other M doesn't look very cartoony to me, like I said in other topics, color doesn't make something cartoony. Because the only thing I can guess your talking about is how bright Samus is. I think they did that for contrast with the environment, that wasn't necessary in Prime and wasn't really possible on the old hardware.
Cartoony isn't solely in visuals, its also in the mannerisms of the world. Like the old DKC games were extremely cartoony, with giant muscular crocodiles with, tiny legs, and big fats ones, chuckling jumping beavers and such, that is cartoony; DKCR seems to be sticking with that. Kirby has always been cutesy more than cartoony and Epic Yarn seems to be keeping that up. Mario is just Mario.
Zelda has always been the series that jumps around based on the gameplay and themes, you can go from Majora's Mask to Wind Waker to Twilight Princess, with something like Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past being a mid ground. There is no set pattern with Zelda, SS has a brighter look and probably a story not nearly as dark as TP, but the next game can go right back to that. Or Skyward Sword can be like OoT where it straddled back and forth, in the past was the world was bright and vibrant, but in the future it was dark and depressing. I don't think they are set in any specific **** especially with Zelda. Some games are just set in their ways, like DKC, Mario Kart, Kirby etc. Others not so much.
