I've never played it, but some people liked FFTA2. I know that Front Mission DS is good, it's turn based also, but I've never heard much people playing it.

Fire Emblem is a good strategy series, it's made by the same people that made Advance Wars, and it's medieval/magic instead of modern. Currently, there isn't one for the DS, but there are 2 great ones for the GBA: Fire Emblem, and FE:Sacred Stones. I would reccomend those two, plus, there is a new Fire Emblem for DS coming sometime soon. You may want to look into that when it comes out.

Some good Strategy games that i have played are:

1) Age of Empires: The Age of Kings

2) Final Fantasy Tactics A2

3) Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is supposed to be high quality as well, though it is real-time and not turn-based like the Advance Wars games. I also second the recommendation of Age of Empires. Another I've been curious about but have not yet played is a game called Glory Days 2. No matter which way you go, the DS has a pretty decent selection of strategy games, so you're likely to find something you'll enjoy.

I had a blast with Lost Magic, but the strategy elements are quite light. There's two Advanced Wars on the DS by the way if you haven't played them both.

Rondo of Swords might be what you're looking for. It's a little different than AW but be warned, it's very tough.

Civilization Revolution DS just came out a little while ago, and while it's much lighter on graphical flare (and more noticably, audio flare, lack of music) than it's console counterparts, it still maintains much of the same gameplay and content, I believe. I wasted 3 hours earlier conquering the world, and if you like something akin to Advance Wars, it's an interesting and diverse indulgement. You can win maps in many ways too, such as military, economic, or cultural dominance. I like it.

Panzer Tactics DS is a straight up combat strategy game. It does not have the long list of buildable units of AW. You do not build many units during a battle at all, maybe 2-3 at most. The rest of your points are needed to keep existing units up in strength. You keep most of your units from each battle in to the next battle.

It is your lucky day, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is IMO the best strategy game on the DS other than AWDoR.
