but how would that work? would you have a team of only one nintendo character? or else you need alot of characters from various nintendo games in order to have many diverse teams....

The game was only popular on the US and they did it anyway so why not make a football one?
there are a few problems with making American Football. the first is that EA has exclusive rights to the official teams, and if they weren't going to have official teams + Nintendo teams, then what were they going to have? Just Mario teams, there aren't enough characters to have enough teams. Another reason not to make it is how will it go up against the Madden version for Wii. It's already geared towards kids. Thus it just doesn't pay to make one.

I was going to point this out but you pretty much hit it dead on.
Idk it probobly wouldn't work out well, I don't think many other countries care for "American" football, but it does sound cool, there are plenty of random Nintendo characters that could be used.
