So my friend and I headed out to the midnight release of Mario Kart and picked it up, getting home around 12:40..playing from 12:40 to 3:30 then heading to sleep...the next morning his parents wanted to give it a try (home on vacation) so we let them and immediately they were able to pick it up and play like champions (on automatic ofcourse)..being against video games in general, this was an amazing accomplishment to win over these anti technology pro outdoors individuals and it was all because they dumbed it down and made it casual. I know people have been complaining about how the game relies a lot on luck but this is what makes it appealing to so many! The sickening laughter that comes from all those watching you as you try and get first is entertainment as its own. Mario Kart was a definite success in my eyes and this I feel is proof..

Sure, it's great that a non-gamer can just pick this game up and win races, but the reason a lot of people here are angry is simple: A lot of them are Mario Kart veterans who feel like they should've won when they lose to casual gamers.

Indeed. Some people just don't like to lose I guess.

Mario Kart is in a way like under ground rock paper scissor games. To the untrained eye it seems purely luck based, but there is a lot of skill involved.

I got MKW today and heres how it went down:

Sister #1 (my normal Brawl partner): Always good at racing games, sucks at this game.

Sister #2: Hates and sucks at video games, got first place on her first try (1 player mode).

Dad: He's horrible at video games unless they have a joystick, almost won, but got 3 red shells and a banana peel within 15 seconds

I find all of this quite humorous, anyone can pick up wheel and race at the same level.

Its definitely not the "easy to get into, hard to master" type game..some of the tracks do get a little difficult like the gold mine one but other than that it is fairly casual imo..

I'm disappointed to see how random and unbalanced the gameplay is in Mario Kart Wii. And having played Mario Kart 64 just a few days prior, I see next to no improvement in the gameplay aspect...and as for the graphics, I was hoping that a game released months after Mario Galaxy would have similarly impressive graphics, but I was again disappointed.

And don't get me started on that piece of s**t wheel it came packaged with. And why is every top teir game released by Nintendo have little to no use of the Wii-remote? The Wii was supposed to elevate the gaming experience, but instead, the "innovative" waggle controls have been relegated to being limited to just menu options.

Mario Kart Wii successful? If you say so...

All of this is true, but it still manages to be fun in my eyes, and it brings in a wide casual base...in my oppinion this is a great marketing success

i don't think the worldwide rankings and player ghost data is anything that the "casual" appreciate. If you think the game is only for the casual, go watch the best time trial time in the world for any course next time you fire up the game.

POS Wheel? I guess a lot of people agree with you, since about 90% of the people I've played online with has used it.. I mean, they disagree with you. :) Somehow I don't think you gave the wheel much of a chance to begin with if you say it doesn't work.

My wife tried the wheel as well and hated it, my daughter tried the wheel as well and hated it, my sister in law tried the wheel as well and hated it.

What upsets me even more than the wheel is that I was moderated for the post you just quoted. I've seen people use full curse words without a blink of an eye. But I Get moderated for daring to say I'm displeased with yet another Nintendo peripheral?

I know some people in power here are biased towards Nintendo, but this is a little over the top. Fan boys are bad enough, but fan boys with power? Come on whoever modded me, it's just a discussion about a video game. Don't be vindictive and take your ball and go home.

I never said I liked it, but to say it doesn't work is wrong, its use was really well done and far from little to no use of it.
