Seriously, this has got to be one of the biggest release date mistakes ever on Nintendo's part.

Everyone wants to buy GTA4 right now! Releasing another "big" nintendo game 10 days BEFORE one of the biggest games in gaming history was a very, very stupid move on Nintendo's part. I'm all for Nintendo, but someone needs to wake up.

Funny how when it came to the decision of which game to buy, I chose Mario Kart Wii...

GTA IV isn't every gamer's biggest priority. Although I really want to play it, there are other games that interest me more. I absolutely can't wait to play Boom Blox.

Yeah, I don't think it was such bad timing on Nintendo's part. I mean, anybody who wants Mario Kart is going to buy it at some point anyway. It's not like it's one of those unfortunate games that isn't going to see sales because of another major title.

I totally see what you're saying. But on the other hand, it's important for Nintendo to keep a presence during high times for the other two consoles. Mario Kart is a strong title, and helps to keep atleast some people talking about Kart and Wii, instead of everyone talking about GTA and 360/PS3.

The same thing can be said for GTA being released the same time as Mario Kart, it was bad timing on Rockstar's part.

I really think it's two completely different audiences. I for one don't own any other system besides a Wii ( I may buy a PS3 this summer, but that's only for the Blu Ray player ), so GTA isn't even an option for me. Nintendo can't base their releases around other systems.

I believe that Nintendo made a good decision having their own high profile game come out at the same time as GTA IV on the other consoles. The only way it would have been a bad decision is if they had made Mario Kart into a horrible game but it has been getting solid reviews.

Nop, sorry, dont share the idea, as far as i know, GTA is doing well, Mario Kart is doing well, i dont think that any title is interfering with the other.

Same here, but in my case I have yet to get get Mario Kart and Okami, just waiting for payday. I still don't know where people get that notion that EVERYONE wants GTA4. I have a rather long list of games I would rather get, and since I have friends and family members that will get it, I'll just be the barrower.

I have to agree with you. I had to buy GTA IV and Mario Kart Wii in the same week. I like to spend on one big game title in a month alone but it didn't happen. Last month I bought 3 games, MLB 08, Super Smash Bros. Brawl & God Of War on PSP.

I think I'm broke now? :(

According to Amazon, GTA IV is outselling Mario Kart, but then Wii Fit is outselling GTA IV. Interesting. I don't think Nintendo is a bit worried.

I think it's funny how there are 6 Nintendo games, accessories, as well as the console itself in the top ten sellers on that site's Video Game page, and everything else is GTA IV...

As it has been said, the two games are so much apples and oranges that they're not really a threat to one another. Sure, I expect GTA IV to sell better, if for no other reason than that it's available for 2 consoles, not to mention the apparent high quality of the game, but that hardly means it's going to hurt Kart's sales. Besides, Kart (or any other game) doesn't necessarily have to break sales records to be successful, it just needs to turn a decent profit, and I'm sure it is (though I'm not following any sales charts because that kind of info is irrelevant to me).

Personally, I'm a Wii/PS3 owner, and I went out and bought Mario Kart while deciding to wait until GTA IV is sent to me through Gamefly. Could be a long wait, but meh.

Sales wise, you better believe it. Wii Fit's going to be huge. The two cater to completely different demographics, but Wii Fit will easily outsell GTA IV.

It goes to show how Nintendo isn't worried about what other companies are doing. Nintendo has faith in their products and they know their targetting a completely different audience. So, if one company drops a bomb of a game (bomb in a good sense) that they can also drop their own bomb and hold their own. I'd say Nintendo has b@lls of steel.

FInally there was a game for me to dust off my 360. MKW is just another game in a long line this year.

MKW may or may not suffer from GTA we will see. It may actually hurt GTA.

Mortal Kombat is a dying franchise that has to rely on other franchises to revive it.

MKW is a thriving(though a bit problematic) franchise.

Yes, and GTA 4 is for PS3 and 360... Mario Kart is for wii... So how can you assume that everyone that has a wii also has a PS3 or a 360?

Wii Fit outselling GTA4? I feel like laughing in my friends face for saying I'm an idiot if a don't get it a freaking fitness aid is outselling it!

Back on topic on not really a huge fan of either series. Mario Kart is a bit too luck-based for my taste and GTA is too open-worldy for me (I like mission structures heh I'm old fashioned).

At my school, everyone has a 360. On release day, they were all excited about GTAIV and I knew at least 10 people who went to the local Gamestop to get it at 12:01. That being said, all the people with Wiis at my school are "casual" (please don't send me Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy, I am using casual out of lack for a better term) except me and one other friend. I felt somewhat left out, but this makes me feel better.

I believe Nintendo's release of Mario Kart was not strategic at all; they released it when they were ready.

I almost feel like we're getting too many games right now.... I'm having a hard time deciding what to get... I have a Wii and a PS3 and I'm pretty sure GTAIV is going to be the best game of the current generation. But I also will own Mario Kart Wii at some point too. I know I'll be picking up Wii Fit as well and I still want to get Okami for the Wii. All those games alone will fetch more than 200 bucks. Plus I'm buying a 3-day pass for the Austin City Limits Music Festival which is $170..... so I'm gonna have to prioritize here. I think for me, its gonna be GTAIV, then Wii Fit, then Mario Kart Wii, then Okami.

I'm in Austin and I'm getting my 3 day pass next week. I've purchased Okami, God of War II, and Mario Kart in the past 2 weeks. Not too interested in Wii fit until other games come out that use the peripheral. I ride my bicycle 50 miles every week so I don't see the need to get fit.

MKW is a thriving(though a bit problematic) franchise.

That changes nothing. If you polled everyone on Gamespot on what MK meant to them, almost everyone would select "Mortal Kombat".

If some random game sequels initials amounted to SF2, or FF7, I'd think the same thing.

Someone in this thread already stated thatWii Fit is selling better than GTA4 at the moment.

However, I wouldn't put money on it selling more than GTA4 overall. Both games have only been out for a short time period. You might want to wait until a later time to decide which game will sell better in the long run.

I don't think it was the worse timing. GTA 4 wont really affect the sles of Mario Kart in any way. People who have the Wii, probably already know that a big game like Mario Kart is coming out. So GTA being released shouldn't hinder the sales. If anything, Mario Kart's bad timing has to do with being released too closely with Brawl.

people who like games like madden and gta are not hardcores. I think that now that we are using these terms so much we should further classify what is what. Theres defnintely something between hardcore and casual and thats what most 360 fans are.

Also for Wii it would have to have a major hardcore presence to sell the games its selling.

Actually, I saw a lot of publicity for MK:Wii. Especially in Wal Mart, they got like 70 copies at launch and had and exclusive booth to sell just MK:Wii and it was sold out pretty fast. It will sell wither way...
