so i just played like an hour...

all of it other peoples stuff...i felt no urge to make my own today.

anyway...2 things that would cool to add is

1. the ability for the best run of your level to be saved for replay so you can see them beating your level.

2. the ability to import your own music (i know this one is probably impossible due to copyright :( but if it happened..ddaamn.

i played a great zelda nes level and a sonic nes level..and a couple of the dont touch anything levels. these were cool.

I want to know if your amiibo work in Super Mario 3/World and "New" forms or is it just for the 8Bit version?

My only complaint is the horrible online sharing. there needs to be some decent filters for friends, and other stuff. it would be nice if Nintendo did away with this fucking id code thing. and it would be nice if i actually typed in a name, i could search by title and tags.

The start-up tutorial was simple and sufficient to get started. Seems like another good game for the Gamepad. I beat the first "10 Mario Challenge" but ran out of lives on the final boss on the second "10 Mario Challenge". The courses are intended to be a source of inspiration, and demonstrate challenge level. I looked at “100 Mario Challenge”, “Courses”, and “Makers”, but didn’t play anything in there yet.

I didn't create a level today. I want to think about a theme for a course, map it out on a piece of graph paper, and then develop the course in the game. Got the 30th Anniversary Mario among others, but didn't use any Amiibo in the game yet. It seems like the Mario franchise has a reached a level of maturity and popularity that it was time for Nintendo to do this. I am glad that ordinary Nintendo gamers like me can share in the gaming experience in a new way.

The game is great, but... It can be overwhelming when it comes to creating levels. There is just so much possibility you sometimes don't know what to put in an area or how to build it effectively. I guess patience is a key for this game.

My problem is I have to say some people's design seem flawed and impossible to beat and the problem I have at the moment I waited in the creation area for a while and got no messages regarding new stuff added every 20 minutes or so.

Overall though some great levels created by users and playing them is fun. Shame you can't add your favourite Mario tune.

@yokofox33: Yeah, i think Nintendo was worried about people being overwhelmed, i think thats why they wanted to release the stuff slowly to allow people to master them better. Hopefully with time peoples levels will get better and more diverse as they play around others levels. That guide book will help some, and playing others levels will help give new ideals.

This game is awesome. Having tonnes of fun with it.

My only complaint so far is that the "eraser" mode music is annoying as hell.

Overall, i love it... pretty much exactly what i was expecting and more. The level design is very simple to get started. Some cool levels already being created. I didn't think i'd like making levels myself, but i find i enjoy that much more than expecting. Good to play with other people too, making and sharing levels.

I do wish they did throw more stuff at you up front. Like you get 12 tools to start, but no Stars, Flower Power, Moving platforms, key building components, until the "second day or wave" . I also feel they should give you tools based on completing levels too, like 10 mario challenge/100 mario challenge.

Very fun game though, can't wait to unlock more content.

I'm enjoying the game, I'm surprised by the popularity of "Don't do anything" levels. I mean, yeah I get it. The whole timing mechanism is impressive, but once you played one you've played them all. I wont be do any of those levels and not really interesting in playing them. But the share number of people making and playing them will keep them at the top of the list. Hopefully Nintendo patches the game for filters, so you can better find levels your looking for. Other than that, I'm having a blast playing and creating. I think I have unlocked everything, as the sub levels was said to be the last thing.

I wonder if Super Mario Maker is for casuals or hardcore gamers. I know these terms are debatable, but what do you think?

My only complaint is unlocking the tools. I got the game early and got everything up until tracks. Since they updated and made it so we where supposed to unlock tools faster my game instead has stopped completely with unlocks. It's annoying because most of the level ideas I have required the use of Warp Pipes and multiple levels, which I don't have access to.

An interesting observation is when you play "expert" mode for the 100-Mario challenge, they're pretty much all terrible levels. They are all troll levels and don't actually involve any skill. Seems like the "Normal" mode is the best mode to play in.

Also, here are a few complaints:

1. I wish subscribing to people was easier. It's definitely not intuitive. Especially people who are already on my Wii U friends list.

2. I wish we could share levels with specific people. That way, I could have friends play test a level before I upload it to everyone. I've had to delete a few levels which had built up stars because of some level breaking elements.

3. It would be nice if we could search for levels using text (instead of using codes or filters).

@nini200: Every super mario skin offer a different powerup that you can't use in any other mario. In Mario 3 you had the leaf in Mario World you had the cape in Mario U you had the propeler hat and so they added a mystery mushroom for Mario 1 where you can put Amiibo costume ( they also add some theme music )

*** SPOILER ***

You don't even need the Amiibo to unlock all the mystery mushroom costume, just need to play the 100lives challenges on all the difficulty and all the other mode to get them.

I really hope they patch in checkpoints, because I think that would really help with completion rates. At this point, the highest completion and starred courses are those "Do Nothing" courses. My course which I don't think are more than mildly difficult have low completion rates.

And filters of course would be great, to filter out those kind of play themselves levels. And have a more personalized suggestion list based on the kind of filter you routinely use. Little Big Planet had a good filter system with the descriptors.

I haven't had too much time with it yet but so far it's been really fun. I don't really create any levels, I just love playing some of the user made ones. I'm not all that great at 2D Mario games so I get frustrated easily at the more difficult ones. However, I have found some levels that despite the fact that I can't complete them, it makes me feel like I can and I find that challenge really fun. To me, that's the definition of good level design.

@KBFloYd: One thing I did not care for is that number of stars gets people to the top of the list instead of percentage of stars.

The top guy has a ton of stars, but in reality he has only 2% likes! I can also confirm by playing their levels, they're not very good, just a clusterf*** of enemies thrown at you at once.

I thought they must be a streamer, because how else would there fair to poor levels get so much exposure.\

That said the game is very content light for $60, I'd say if you're ONLY creating levels or ONLY playing levels the game is a $30 experience. I wish they'd spent less time making the pre-included levels and just ported Super Mario All Stars + U.

There is a million courses!!! if you've gone tired of it already, either you don't like Mario 2D platformers, or you haven't found the really good levels. Do you create your own levels too? I find myself playing my own levels a lot. I'd like to see them start a Trending filter, OR add a rating scale of 1 to 10 for each level. The only levels that get stars are on the featured and starred back. There is over a million "other" courses that go unnoticed.

Personally i think it's an awesome game, (But i've been a gamer since the NES days) I do prefer 2D over 3D mario. I am really enjoying the 'good' levels, and creating and sharing is quite fun as well. I'm interested to see what my friends/family think of my levels., etc. It's too bad the Wii U has sold so poorly. This would have been MASSIVE on the Wii.

Here's an interesting thing about this game

http://gonintendo.com/stories/243474-nintendo-explains-why-all-super-mario-maker-game-styles-use-new-s

Coming from Nintendo's Takashi Tezuka...

“In the end we used the New Super Mario Bros. U system for all of the game styles. There was quite a lot of discussion about this within the team. Staff who had strong attachment to the original games expressed a strong desire to see implemented the same system they remembered. However, when players who are used to the modern Mario physics tried playing with the old physics, they found it much more difficult than they remembered. The original Super Mario Bros would only scroll to the right, so we tentatively made it so that it doesn’t scroll left in this game style. However, many people on the team complained that it was less fun to play. Still, we have left in some unique aspects to each game style, like how you can carry shells from Super Mario Bros 3 onwards, but you can’t throw them upwards until Super Mario World, and you can only wall-jump in New Super Mario Bros. U.”

I've barely touched it so far so don't have much to say about it. I hope they SMB2(USA) as a style later on.

Just got it and played it for an hour. Not too impressed. Yeah, it's a well designed game with a ton of features, but I just don't find the gameplay of Mario itself really interesting.

Maybe it's one of those things that gets better with more patience.

you have to be a big mario 2d platformer fan. like played tons of hours already and be an expert.

i am so i have tons of fun trying levels...

but if you dont really care much for 2d mario games then maybe you wont find it good.

I love how there is no attempt to hide the bias here, "complaints/praise impressions"...

Played some demos, will probably get it at a price reduction. Looks fun though, im sure there is a lot of good user generated content.

I picked up Super Mario Maker when it was released and have probably put in about 10 hours total. Creating your own levels is fun, but playing others' levels is usually not. I generally avoid games which focus on user created content because the content users create is mostly sub par, and unfortunately Mario Maker is no exception. The real shame in this case is that the issue could have been mitigated had a more robust user rating system been implemented.

Oh well, it's still fun to play and fine tune my own creations. 7.5/10. Worth $39.95 new IMHO.

Been addicted to it recently. So far, I've made nine level, each one in my opinion better than the next. I also make extremely hard levels. People don't have the patience to pass them. I'm torn because I take pride in the fact that my levels are so hard, but I'm also sad at the same time because no one can commit to finishing them. I dunno... I just think it's a waste of creativity to not make a hard level when the past 30 years of Mario games has been mostly a cake walk.

yea...

most people dont want to take the time to figure a level out....thats one of the drawbacks of the game...

everyone wants it easy but creative.

Well I had the pleasure of playing this game in my local game shop yesterday and it's made me want a Wii-U even more... LOL!!!

Anyway, the one thing I think the created levels would benefit from is some kind of leader-board for scores or time, this would give the levels more reason to replay them in my opinion, plus I don't see the point of having a SCORE if it isn't recorded anywhere?. At the moment, I could only see myself replaying a level if I really, really, REALLY liked it.

Still want a Wii-U.. anyone giving one away? ;)
