I didn't see this on the forums today so I'm just bringing it to you guys attention. Apparently the people who directed the Metroid Prime series at Retro Studios left Retro to start their own company which is headed by EA. From the sounds of things they wanted to be in a company where small teams get to make big, amazing looking games on the console of their choice. They probably didn't like the fact that Metroid Prime didn't sell very well but was an amazing game in the GC days. The story can be found at http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20246 .

To me it personally feels like betrayal for them to leave Nintendo like this but at the same time now Nintendo or Retro can hire people who want to exclusively develop for just Nintendo. I'm boycotting games from their new company by all means.

How do you guys feel about this?

They left Retro a while ago, we just had no clue where they were going. Good for them though. I doubt they wanted to make Metroid for the rest of their lives. They're free now.

I would do the same thing if I was them. It's bad news for Nintendo though. Even though they won't be shackled to the Wii and Metroid, I'd be interested anything they put out for Wii as a 3rd party, simply because they did such a great job with MP3.

this is great news! Other than Echoes, which I don't care for much, they make great games. Now they aren't tied to the Wii or nintendo so they will have a good chance to make a game worth playing again.

it's not the end of the world.

Armature/EA's situation is just like Suda (Grasshopper)/Ubisoft's deal they had but deeper.

Armature is deving the games so they are solid, and EA takes over to polish and get ready for distribution/marketing allowing Armature to work on new products.

I'm wondering what Nintendo will do with Metroid now. Will they hand it off to another 2nd party? Will they keep it in house?

I have faith with them, so it's just a waiting game now.

Same thing with Bungie. People don't want to work on the same games all their lives. Good to see them trying something new and doing what they want.

To me it personally feels like betrayal for them to leave Nintendo like this but at the same time now Nintendo or Retro can hire people who want to exclusively develop for just Nintendo. I'm boycotting games from their new company by all means.

...This is a serious condender for my new sig.

From what I understand it is similar to the Valve/EA partnership.

EA is not messing with Valve's games, but EA has the resources Valve doesn't.

And just because the directors of Retro are gone does not mean Retro is ruined...

Retro Studios is a first-party developer since it is 100% owned by Nintendo.

They are owned by EA. LOL thats like dropping your standards from 1st class plane tickets to sleeping with LLAMA's in the luggage hole.

They'll be sorry! EA are known for messing up potentially good games.

MP3 sold poorly? As for them leaving.... I hope they make some really great games but my gut tells me thier glory days are over. It seems that whenever some one leaves Nintendo they really hit the bottom. Too Human anyone?

Metroid will still be on Nintendo. Retro and Nintendo own the rights to it. I think its fine if the Devs of the Prime series start making games for all consoles. That just means that we as Wii owners get new different franchises from them too. I wish them the best of luck as they are awesome developers and hope they continue to make great games.

This might actually please some gamers. I know there are quite a few out there that would like to see Metroid return to it's roots.

If Nintendo, EAD or one of their own Japan-based studios actually made Metroid this time it'd probably be even better than Retro's version. For instance, if the studio that did Galaxy made Metroid how great would that be? I seems like that studio has game veterans as well as a lot of new ideas to put in games.

Retro did an excellent job with Prime and Corruption (After playing Echoes then Prime 1 I can say I like most of Prime more than Echoes just because Tallon IV and the Chozo seem way more appealing). Maybe Nintendo can breathe life back into Metroid because I'd have for the franchise to stop here.

What will become of Retro? Will they hire new people and take on new projects other than Metroid? Will Nintendo develop Metroid themselves and let Retro re-create other Nintendo games? This story feels extremely incomplete so I don't know what's gonna happen.

I can see the Metroid series going way downhill from here... sort of like what happened with Donkey Kong.

A few things, one this is old news, there are about 27 topics on this already. Two a few people from the Retro team left, not the entire team, if Nintendo still wanted Metroid made by Retro it can be done, those three will simply be replaced, end of story. Its not the end of Metroid, its not the end of Retro, its not Metroid going multiplat or anything like that, a few people left but life and business goes on.

Meh, they only made one good game, Metroid PRime, which happens to be one of the best games ever. Prime 2 and 3 weren't good. They were too similiar. Hopefully Nintendo will make the next Metroid game.
