I'm going to get MPH this weekend and I'm just wondering if the story of this game has ties to past Metroid games. The only Metroid game I had was Zero Mission for GBA in which I loved.

MPH has a story? No, the game has nothing to do with the others aside from the fact that you're Samus. :P

The story ties are incredibly thin, and the story exclusive to Hunters is thin as well. Worse though, is that fact that Hunters is just kind of a crummy game. If all you had was Zero Mission for the GBA, I'd recommend Metroid Fusion (also for the GBA); great 2D game play, miles better than Hunters.

Yeah, it's already been said but there really isn't much of a story in Metroid Prime Hunters. There isn't much of a single player experience at all really. What exists is a mindless, repetitive bore. It's nothing like the other Metroid games. The multiplayer mode is pretty fun if FPS games are your thing, but there's better out there to be honest.

If your asking about the Story of the whole Metroid series it goes.

Metoid/Zero Mission, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, Metroid Other M, and Metroid Fusion.

Metroid Prime Hunters is between Metroid Prime and Prime 2 (Hunters takes place between a few weeks between the First Prime game and Prime 2.)

There isn't really a story to the single player mode-in fact, it was like a last minute add-on or something. lol
