I just started playing Metroid Prime: Other M again after setting it aside for 18 months. I like the game, but it is really difficult. The map layout can get pretty confusing sometimes and some of the bosses are pretty difficult. Presently, I am stuck in sector 2 trying to get past the boss, Rhedogian, at the materials lift section. Rhedogian has kicked my butt at least 9 times. This is almost halfway through the game. Anyone else find this game challenging?

Dodging properly is key to the combat. It's been too long to remember specifics, but I know that skillful dodging and quick kills make the combat less challenging and way more fun. It takes some practice, but once the controls become second nature, that game is a BLAST to play.

Can't say I agree that the map layout is confusing, though. It's about as straight-forward as it can get. That's one of the main complaints with that game. There aren't even any secret areas that aren't on the map. Traditional Metroid games have much more elaborate maps.

FYI, it's not "Metroid Prime: Other M". It's "Metroid: Other M". The "Prime" title refers to a specific trilogy of games made by Retro Studios, not to be mixed up with the mediocre game that is Other M.

Personally, I didn't find it challenging at all. It'll probably click for you when you figure out how the core mechanics work. But it's been a while since I played the game, so I can't remember anything in particular to be helpful with.

I thought it was a pretty fun game. Sure it wasn't on the same level as the Prime games, but it wasn't supposed to be. It was nice to see Samus in 3rd person again, and the combat was enjoyable. There was a couple tough parts, but overall I got through it fairly quick.

@JordanElek:

I watched people on youtube defeat Rhedogian pretty easy. Samus only has 99 health and Rhedogian does 40 damage per hit. Its hard not to get hit, and Samus cannot heal quickly enough to make it worth trying. I have to hit the weak spot with a missile while he is shooting at me. I did it once, so I know I can do it; but its probably going to take 40 more tries to get smooth enough to kill him.

There is a lot of backtracking in the levels/areas with puzzles. You can sometimes see where you need to go on the map, but not how to get there. I really try to avoid looking at walkthroughs or other source material when I play games, but I really needed to for this one.

Sorry about the miss-naming.

I really like the visuals/graphics in this game and even the combat, but some of the boss fights can be really difficult. I also have Metroid Prime Trilogy, but haven't played any other Metroid game besides Other M. I wonder if I will like the gameplay of the older side-scroller versions better? Thanks for the encouragement.

@Collie_Lover: I don't even remember that fight and I finished the game three times. :\

It's the fight that takes place on the actual lift? The guy in the video I watched never had to shoot a missile at the weak point, so I'm guessing the fight you're stuck on is a different one. Regardless, it looks like you need to get the dodge down. His pattern is pretty consistent.

I can't believe that boss shows up four times throughout the game and I don't remember it at all....

And watching that footage makes me really want to play that game again. The combat is so ridiculously fun.

You beat the game 3 times-congratulations! I am probably a casual gamer.

I am trying to defeat Rhedogian on the lift. I watched a couple of videos last night, and I must have mixed them up in my mind. Here is the one that shows what I need to do. Is it ok to post this link?

I think I can do this after seeing it again.

@Collie_Lover: Yeah, that's exactly the one I watched. It looks like you can missile his weak point, but you don't have to. The opening seems pretty tight. Just dodge, dodge, shoot most of the time and you should be fine.

Also, you still only have 99 health? You haven't found any energy tanks yet? Extra health would help quite a bit, too. I can't remember if they show up on the map at that point, but you should definitely be looking for them.

I am open-minded about sequels, and will try the other ones when I get passed this one. I know that I am doing them in reverse order, but I wanted to start with the newest one first.

I am just glad I read about and avoided the glitched door in sector 3 so I didn't have to restart the game. I want to try the prime games too.

Comparing the Primes to Other M is as silly as comparing the Galaxy games to the Mario Party games. Same main charscter, sure, but obviously different style of game. For what it was, Other M was a good game, I enjoyed it a lot.

@JordanElek:

You can missile his weak spot, but it is hard to be accurate and more risky than charging your laser while you are dodging I am guessing. The youtube person finished that section in 2 min, 17 sec. It seems like forever when you don't know what your doing, lol! I must have missed an energy tank somewhere. I think I have 3 tanks. The person playing in the video has 4 energy tanks, but I should be alright if I can get the dodging right.

@ttualumni13:

I am ok with variations in style of a game generally speaking. I guess I will have to try the older versions to know what people are really talking about.

@GamerNerdTalk:

You think I will like other Metroid games better than Metroid: Other M? I really like the character and the story is good too in Other M, but Rhedogian is just giving me a hard time, lol!

I beat Rhedogian last night in the Wii hours of the night. Thank goodness I got passed the materials lift section before JordanElek beat the game a fourth time, making me look worse than I already am. Now apparently, I have to fight this boss 3 more times before the game is over. (BTW I did have 4 health tanks and not 3).

@Collie_Lover: lol, it's your first Metroid game, don't worry about it. It's a weird one to start with because it's basically a simple character-action game (simple in complexity of mechanics, not in difficulty) grafted onto a weird version of the classic Metroid structure.

I think you'll enjoy the 2D games better. The combat is much less frantic in those games, for the most part, and there's a bigger focus on exploration. The Prime games have more frantic combat, but they also have great exploration, which is why most people love them. I've played through Metroid Prime at least seven or eight times. That's just what I do with Metroid games. ;)

I think there both good, in a way, my experience with Prime is I've played it a lot of times. It's a pretty fun game. though, as for Other M! I'm still pretty stuck on one of the missions and I can't seem to beat the Queen Metroid. so I can't really explain much on Other M. :c

Once you get the dodge down, you have the game beat. I found the control scheme odd, and the lack of exploration disappointing. The story was very lackluster as well and could have been done better. A decent game though really with some great moments.

Have the game, beat the game. It was pretty good, not as bad as everyone made it seem. Though the Primes were better.

@Bardock47:

Yeah, I just wanted to shoot everything and move on to the next fight. I couldn't do that with Rhedogian. Like you and others have said, dodging was the most important factor. The timing of the dodge and attacks were so important.

@Collie_Lover: The dodge mechanic in the game is broken. You can just keep tapping a certain direction on the D-pad, or run around in a small circle to avoid 90% of enemy attacks. So, you could try that if you're having trouble getting the timing down.

Other M is not a favourite among fans, but I feel that it's not as bad as most people make it out to be. I've been having a sort of Metroid hunger these past couple months where I've beaten Zero Mission, Fusion, Super Metroid, Prime, Prime 3, and currently playing Other M. You should definitely play the 2D Metroid games, especially if you enjoy Other M.
