In anticipation of the new Zelda on the Wii, i've been thinking about what Zelda games i like the most, and why. I've got a list put together ( in NO particular order) with some condensed reasons.

Link's Awakening: I still play this game at least once a year (Around New Years
usually) to remind myself that you don't need next generation
graphics or uncompressed audio to have an amazing game.
Rich story, unforgettable characters, and a charming mysterious
world, all wrapped up in a tiny package that sings its heart out with
midi audio make this one of the best.

Majora's Mask: How deep does the rabbit hole go? In Majora's Mask i still
haven't found the bottom. I've played this game since its release,
and to this day I continue to find new things.
The sheer depth of this game is staggering. This game also has the
most "alive" world of any Zelda, a world that moves on whether Link
does anything to stop the moon or not. They all just keep on living
their lives, trying to sow the seeds of happiness in bitter bitter
soil.

A Link to the Past: This game is quintessential top down Zelda at it's finest.
This game is so loaded with surprises, awesome dungeons, crazy items,
and secrets that it's playtime often extends as far or farther then
the current 3D generation of console Zeldas. This one also features
an outstanding soundtrack, and introduced many modern Zelda staples
into the franchise.

Wind Waker: This game is a gorgeous feast for the eyes, and a cornucopia of
interesting Zelda story. It serves as an important piece of Zelda
canon, and an example of Zelda game-play at its finest.
In this game it's all about the characters and the writing, two very
high points in a game as expertly polished and put together as any
Nintendo has ever made.

Ocarina of Time: The fairytale epic that is still used as a measuring stick for
action adventure games today. In a series which had already
established itself and its characters well, Oot was the first game to
take this familiar story and drench it in 3D visuals. Characters and
places came to life in ways that were both beautiful and exciting.
Beneath a sky with real constellations, and a sun which set and rose
with time, OoT played out an adventure with so much scale and majesty
that it is even today remembered as one of the best. Hyrule Field was
an endless stretch of freedom and mystery. Beneath every footstep
could be a passageway, behind every wall could await danger and
treasure, around every corner a new world of discovery awaited. These
are the things which make Zelda great. These are the things which OoT
perfected.

Honorable Mention

Oracle of Ages/Seasons: These games are fantastic, and when played
one after the other they become even greater then the sum of their
parts. Lots of content for game boy games, lots of memorable
characters, places, and events. If you haven't played them, they are
a strong recommendation.

Minish Cap: This game is nothing but Zelda love. A real gem on the
GBA, with some great dungeons, and great writing. This title features
some very fun items, and some very interesting Zelda story.

Legend of Zelda: The game that started it all. A massive free roaming adventure
on an open world map riddled with secrets and characters. This game
remains a fantastic adventure to this day, and simply one of the best
of its own.

Where is Twilight Princess?

Twilight Princess was a good game, but I think it was a mediocre
Zelda when you get right down to it. I also think it is unique situation
that deserves a reason.

The controls
- moving Link feels like moving a vertical stick through mud

The world
- the forest felt like a hallway, they turned Zora River into a mini
game, and Hyrule Field was covered in pointless canyons, aka
invisible walls

The items
- The spinner was cool, but ultimately useless after it's short
inception and a couple secrets on the world map, just like the
Dominion Rod. (Dominion Rod turns into ball in a cup)

TP just feels very unpolished and rushed. A lot of the little things
that make a Zelda game feel complete are simply missing from it.

- If it's a game with Night and Day, let Link have a little control,
especially when certain things only happen at certain hours.

- If your gonna give link a wearable item, like a mask, at least show
him wearing it. Don't take the shortcut around it.

- The back of the Wii version box shows Link with a magic meter. Not
only does this make the game feel slapped together, it proves they
rushed it through the last legs of production for holiday / Wii
launch.

- I know the value of a blue rupee. Stop telling me. A very annoying
glitch, and more fuel for the fire when it comes to arguing this games
cut and paste nature.

etc. etc.

The games pacing and story tend to skip around, the world and it's
inhabitants feel like props and extras instead of living and
breathing the way they do in the other 3D Zeldas, and it is much more
linear then its modern counterparts. It does do some things right,
however. The Ball and Chain, for one. Bomb Arrows for another. And
not to mention a wicked awesome ice temple and decent story. But it's
not enough to save the sinking ship. I think it's sad how many people gave
this game stellar reviews, and are afraid to say anything negative
about it. I'll say this, it is worth a play.

Those are my two cents, 5 favorites, 3 runner ups, and 1 meh zeldas. What are yours, and why? Or maybe you just wanna complain about my list. Cool. *watches*

in order(ish):

Ocarina of Time - The game simply put is a masterpiece. From the moment you turn it on the catchy yet emotional music grabs you and the vibe never lets go. It feels happy at times, sad at others. They just made the perfect adventure that is possibly the most nostalgic game for me ever made.

A Link to The Past - Basically a 2D version of OoT. It has the best artstyle of all the 2D zeldas aswell, feeling more like an overhead 3D zelda due to its polish and overall quality feel.

Wind Waker - It misses a couple of things, but what it did it did very well. It was the most upbeat zelda yet, but that just made the grim parts all that much more serious. A very unique zelda that sticks out due to its creativity. I love the towns and such of the game. So happy feeling.

Majoras Mask - Possibly the most fun zelda, which sounds funny as it is not on the top of my list, but it is just a blast to play and there is so much to do. It just doesnt feel quite as much like zelda as the others I guess. That being said, it is a breath of fresh air and has a silly but fun feel with plenty to unlock and find.

Twilight Princess - The most epic, dark and story driven zelda. it is a long, epic adventure, but misses some aspects for me such as the lack of towns. I love it, but the only reason it is here and not a 2d one, is because I prefer the 3D zeldas usually.

Oh and BTW, I believe that Skyward Sword is going to place among this list, possibly even second, but I highly doubt first ;). Could dissapoint, but I think it is going to be amazing.

I have but played every Zelda game to date. Ocarina of Time triumphs over all. Then (in no particular order)- The Legend of Zelda (nes), A Link to the Past, Windwaker. The 5th spot would go to either Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess. I intend to get Majora's Mask again, a 2nd play through it would be. Then will I rank it.

Top 5 in order and why

1.Wind Waker: Well it was the first one I played. It had great story and excellent art style plus it was so good controlling the wind.

2.Ocarina of Time: Well I don't like going with the crowd. This had excellent puzzles, superb gameplay and overall was just an amazing experience.

3.Link to the Past: The massive overworld with 2 parrall worlds Light and Dark, its bosses were huge and it had about 12 temples. Thats more than any other in the series.

4.Twilight Princess: Because it was a fantastic game. Anyone who disagrees then I am sorry but this game had new items and was probably the darkest Zelda in the series, plus you could joust on horseback.

5.Minish Cap: The new and creative items made it really memorable.

1) Ocarina of Time - Why? I love the music to death! The story was epic and well told. The dungeon design and puzzles were top notch (no 3d zelda has really come close). The game was actually challenging (something a lot of Zelda are missing nowadays). I just love it. 2) Windwaker - I love the artstyle, everything just comes to life and it makes the world just that much more interesting. I enjoyed the story and the characters quite a bit, and the music was a also fantastic once again. Not a big fan of hunting down the "triumph forks" lol and some of the dungeons can get a little boring. 3) A Link to the Past - 2d Zelda at its finest. Once again a great soundtrack and excellent gameplay, a very challenging game, but that only made beating it that much more rewarding. Not a huge emphasis on story, but what it had worked to keep the pacing of the game smooth. Having that large open world to explore was great too. Epic game is epic lol. 4) Twilight Princess - The more I play this game the more I come to appreciate it. The somber story, the terrific artstyle (only bogged down by bad textures). The music had its moments, but it was not up to snuff with the masterpiece of its brethen (Midna's Lament is the exception). Game was not very challenging, but the dungeon design and puzzles were some of the best in any Zelda game. The overworld was not all that great neither were the towns, but everything else was top notch. 5) Oracle of Seasons - I.......Love........This.......Game! No other words need to be said. Flagship did an excellent job crafting these gems (with Nintendo's supervision of course lol).

1) Twilight Princess 2) Ocarina of Time 3) Majora's Mask 4) Wind Waker

To be perfectly honest with you all, as big a fan of the Zelda series as I am, I really haven't played (as much) of the other games as I know I should have. They just surprisingly weren't enough to convey my interest, though Ihave played The Original Zelda, The Second Zelda, andI beleive Link's Awakening.

I hope you are all not disapointed that I was only able to specify 4. I have played the other games but just not enough. I suppose we can wait until Skyward Sword and OoT 3D come out though.I might have to update my list.(:

A Link To The Past is a must play. My favorite 2D one no doubt. That being said others such as the oracles are great.

martinX3X

They were great. The writing was very good, unexpectedly so. I just think Phantom Hourglass was a little too easy / short, and even though it was fun i felt kind of robbed by Spirit Tracks not letting me run around the world map on my own two feet. The train was fun, but a zelda that only lets you move around on rails is missing a certain sense of freedom that you might not miss till it's gone.
