Hey Guys,

I was thinking, with the release of the DS, N64 ports are entirely possible.

If you may not already know, Nintendo has doubled the CPU Power from 67Mhz to 133Mhz, which is 40Mhz more powerful Hz-for-Hz than the N64 (This is assuming that both CPU's perform the same Hz-for-Hz). They have also Quadrupled the amount of ram from 4MB to 16MB, which is 4x the N64 and 2x the N64 plus the add-on expansion memory pack. Another thing that can make this possible, is that DS games only need to be rendered at 256x192 pixels, while N64 games needed to be rendered at 640x480.

What do you guys think?

It wouldn't matter how powerful the DS became; so long as the system lacks a proper analogue stick, the majority of N64 games ported to the DS will take a serious hit in the control department.Neither the D-Pad nor the touch screen are good substitutes for an analogue stick. There are a couple exceptions I can think of,however, where a port may work, and perhaps improve the original game, but only a few.First person shooters come to mind.

First of all they're already possible. Example, Mario 64 DS, which also looked a bit better on DS. Very few N64 games (I think only one) were rendered in 640 x 480, most were around half that. You're just looking at the numbers. DS has similar specs to N64 already, but more modern hardware and developers are more talented. Long story short, they can already be ported and look a bit better.

The game felt really cheap though.

They are possible, but nowadays ninty just lack the interest to port more N64 games, maybe in the future?

The DS is really like a N64 but the graphics are bit better and there is a touch screen to it.

My main hope for the DSi is that the improved hardware is being specifically designed to be fully capable of emulating all the games on the VC, and the the only reason VC hasn't been announced yet is because they still have to program all the ports to be playable with the touch screen instead of a joystick. Otherwise why would the hardware necessarily need improving?

However the DSi might not be powerful enough to emulate N64 games, but you could easily port them now even though they always could. Super Mario 64 DS looked better than Super Mario 64 did.

Why do you feel it was cheap? They made more characters, new levels, and even changed the castle up a bit.

I loved that game, and was actually playing it like 2 days ago.

Which calls for Nintendo's new add-on...the DS Stick! It's an analog stick that you put on the D-Pad. :P

Well N64 ports are completely possible except a few games. Mario 64DS could happen however it woudn't be good because the DS lacks an analog stick. The touch screen certainly doesn't help.

It's entirely possible, as demonstrated with SM64DS. However, we can get N64 games on the VC for the Wii so I'd rather they not port games over.

Licensed games like this (I.E. not ones owned completely by Nintendo) will not get ported.

To get back on topic, more N64 ports could be possible in the future, but some games would DEFINITELY need to be touched up (for instance, look at Goldeneye again, guys, the game did NOT age well and the graphics would need to be completely redone for a port).

It was also difficult to control compared the N64 version. Super Mario 64 DS actually gave me a bad impression about the DS (it was the first game I played for it) and I didn't buy any more games for it until Phantom Hourglass came out. Then I realised it was just the Mario game that wasn't fit for the DS.

While I would love to see it, I dont think it is going to happen. Now what would be cool is if you could take your n64 games for the wii and play them on the road. you know pop a sd card into your dsi that you downloaded a game onto from your wii. I cant think of any game on vc that wouldnt be compatible with the DSi. The only thing is what you guys mentioned before. How would you control it for n64? nes/snes/genesis/turbographix16/and all the others would work perfectly.

It would be good to see Zelda: Ocrina of Time on the DS, I never owned a Nintendo 64 thats why I would like to see it on DS.
