I know you don't NEED to be at the Wii Menu to turn off the system, but what I'm asking is:
Is it better to return to the Wii Menu before shutting off the system? Usually I'll stop playing, return to the Wii Menu, then turn it off. But is that really necessary?
Sometimes (usually late at night when I'm ready to pass right out), I'll just turn the system off right from the game I'm playing. Does that hurt the Wii?

I don't think it is necessary, but I also do it that way.

From so many users who also use computers we're just conditioned to shut down all programs and go back to the "desktop" before we shut everything off.

It's fine to shut off the game off anywhere as long as data isn't being written to the Wii.

No. I think that the power button on the Wiimote is there for a reason.

Then again, it IS highly recommended to eject the game disk before turning off the Wii, and the safest way to eject the game is to go to the Wii Menu first.

Where'd you hear that?

I don't think it makes any problems to turn off the wii while in a game.

Excellent point.

If you're following the Wii manual point by point then you should always be at the main screen so they you can eject the disk before you shut it off.

I go to the Wii menu before turning it off but I don't think there is anything wrong with doing that directly from the game.

I do that to.And I also have a thing where I need to hold the power button until the light turns red. I don't like leaving it on standby. :D

The Wii manual which comes in three different languages ( or even more in EU ) inside the Wii box.

Well, returning to the menu first in a VC game is required if you want to make a quick save. Otherwise it isn't neccessary at all.

As long as you don't forget to take it out before moving the console, leaving it in when you turn the system shouldn't really cause a problem.

No, Not really but I find it to turn off faster at the wii menu than in game, like in brawl.

When i first bought my wii, I was having problems with it, don't remember what they were now, but I called Nintendo. The tech support guy asked me to go into the wii menu and tell him if there was a section in my "today's acomplishments" that was listed as "other". I had like 4 hours or something in that category. He said that was where I was turning the system off while playing a game and that I should always go back to the menu to power off.

He didn't say anything about ejecting the disk, he said it was the way the system was programmed with the connect24. I did what he said and i haven't had any more problems nor any more "other" categories in my tasks list.

Thats what I was told by Nintendo. Don't know if its changed now or not with all the updates.
