That game drives me insane. I own it on the GC Collector's Disc. I've never beaten it but I did make it through a decent portion without a guide. The NES Zelda games definately haven't aged as well as the NES Mario games.

Here is a map, however it is so detailed that it may be considered cheating.  I am not sure if it includes the entire world, but I think that it does. http://www.wiiliving.com/images/legend_of_zelda_overworld2.png

Zelda was so far ahead of its time, its amazing. No, I cant do it with out a guide. The lack of a map hurts somewhat, but they are easy to find online. I will give you some linkage (didn't see that pun until I typed it)

Since the map of Hyrule came with the original game, it doesn't count as cheating. I've beaten it, but it was really hard and I used a guide quite a lot. I can't get past dungeon 5 on the second quest though.

I beat when I was a kid, Man that was fun. But I enjoyed Link to the Past more.

That is something I love about the VC...hard as crap games. I can beat today's games, but the old ones give me more fits than I care to have. Thats not a complaint, though. Maybe games are easier today and my skills have diminished over the years.

Impressive, since that is impossible.  I was going to explain, but just posting this is an insult to those of us who have beaten it on the NES without any walkthroughs or outside help.  Nintendo Power was basically written for those who couldn't beat LoZ.
