I have a NES, SNES, N64, DS and Wii, but I never played a Zelda game. I don't have a 3DS yet, but I'm planning on getting for Resident Evil Revelations and other cool puzzle games like DS had (Prof. Layton, etc.). If I wanna start on Zelda, could I get the new released Ocarina of Time for 3DS or do I have to play the earlier games first on NES and SNES.

I don't wanna go and buy all Zelda games, I'm not even sure I'll like it, I just want a game that shows what a Zelda game really is (preferable on newer systems).

Most Zelda games don't have sequels or anything, except Majora's Mask is a sequel to Ocarina of Time, Phantom Hourglass is a sequel to Wind Waker, and I think some others... but ultimately it really doesn't matter, most Zelda games are on their own. Each game has its own "Link" and its own story. Ocarina of Time is one, for example. I can not recommend it enough.

Yeah, you can start with pretty much any of them and understand it. A lot of people started with Ocorina of Time on the N64, I think. And I think that is a pretty good start, especially now that it's being remade on the 3DS. That's probably the best place to start.

Ocarina of Time is probably the best place to start if you've never played a Zelda game, actually. Story-wise, it comes first of all the 3D Zelda games (including the DS games). If you're thinking of playing Ocarina of Time 3D, that's a good idea.

I'd say you want to play Ocarina of Time before Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, or Wind Waker - but otherwise, the order doesn't really matter. Except if you're gonna play Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks, you should probably play Wind Waker first.

None of the 2D games have that much story, so you can play those whenever (if you want to play them at all).

You can start with any game. Just don't expect to understand some references.

I heard, if you don't start from the beginning and play all the games in the correct timeline order, Miyamoto comes and slaps your face. What, that's not true? Then I guess you can start with any game you like.

Although Skyward Sword takes place before Ocarina of Time.

But anyway He can start with any title other then Majora's Mask should be played after Ocarina of Time and Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks should be played after Wind Waker.

But yeah they are mainly seperate stories because each Zelda game mainly has a different Link and Zelda their are some cases where it is the same. Also every game that has Ganondorf/Ganon that is always the same person.

Theres a few games you want to avoid, otherwise you can virtually start anywhere.

games are: Zelda II: The Adventure of link , Four Swords adventures, and four swords on the GBA. They give you a different impression of what zelda actually is, its not that they are bad, just different from the rest, anywhere else will give you the right idea.

Some real nice start points though: Legend of Zelda,Links Awakening, OoT and Wind Waker

The storylines aren't really important in Zelda games. You do'nt have to understand what's going on to play them. Also, if you get a 3DS, make sure you download Link's Awakening DX. It's a great game.

I'd start with A Link to the Past to get a good feel of the series.

most zelda games aren't related, and even when they are, it's nothing that can get in your way. so go ahead and pick whatever you want.

Im glad you asked the question. I was also wanting to get into the Zelda series after all the hype lately. I think I will start with a Link to the Past and see where it gets me.

It's up there but I personally wouldn't say it's the best. Obviously this is your opinion but for me it's a tie between Link to the Past or Ocarina(I can't decide)!

Yeah, of course that's my opinion. :)

For some reason, I couldn't enjoy OoT as much as everyone else. Maybe that will change with my new copy of OoT 3D (which I only bought for the music CD). :P

I agree with this. OoT to me is the defintive 3D one and ALLTP is the 2D one. But of course they are all amazing.

If that's the case I'd say go for it and you should not in any way be disapointed. Zelda Oot is easily the Pinnacle of the series its not even up for debate, it is the best.

Don't get me wrong the originals were great but OoT is to this day (including the new 3D version) an absolute masterpiece.

i was in roughly the same boat, and yeah, the 3d version plays closer to WW in terms of tighter controlls, animations ect. this fixes most of the problems for people like me who started with WW and feel that ocerina of time is clunky.

Well, I played Zelda OoT on the N64 way before WW, and my thoughts were the same as now.

You can generally start with any Zelda Game. I would prefer Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Do not get Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks until you have playing another Zelda game, those are the only ones I would not prefer you start with.

I started with Phantom Hourglass and I didn't really understand some parts of the story, but it wasn't that big of a deal. They were just small things.

I don't think that you need to start off with the original. The following are the four best Zelda games. They're not in order of how good they are, but instead how well they flow into each other.
1 A Link to the Past
2 Ocarina of Time
3 Majora's Mask
4 Wind Waker
