Why is it going through kickstarter (or whatever it's called)? Nintendo is not funding it this time?

I've seen the trailer and it looks great. I recognized a few areas from Eternal Darkness and the Tome is back. I think I seen Alex too.

It isn't Eternal Darkness, just similar. Nintendo owns ED so Precursor games can't use any of that. They want $1.5 million in crowd funding but since they're Candian they don't use Kickstarter. Also, they've got 10k towards they're goal already.

Like I said, the Tome and recognizable areas are shown in the trailer. It has to be from the Eternal Darkness universe. That's what I gathered from the trailer anyway. Maybe the gameplay would be entirely different.

You should probably specify that this will be a spirtual sucessor and not a true part 2

I am quite surprised on the limited plaforms the game will be released. I thought there would be more platforms.

Also, I wonder how crowd-funding works. It is similar to Kickstarter?

It looks that way, but it literally can't be related to Eternal Darkness because Nintendo owns that IP. It would have Eternal Darkness in the title if it really were related, since that name has a lot of clout. It would also have more recognizable symbols from the ED universe, but I scoured the trailer and saw no sign of those iconic runes.

But with that said, it looks like they're channelling everything they possibly can from the realm of ED without actually crossing the trademark line to get people on board with this. They'll call it the Tome of Infinite Twilight or something and use different Lovecraftian names for the Ancients.

As long as it's a game that actually works something like the original game, I don't care that it's not directly related. I really would've liked to see what Mantarok has been plotting all these years, though.

I wonder what that trademark line is, because it does look like it takes a lot of elements from ED. Hopefully nothing bad comes out of this in that regard =\

I played it once through, ages ago (when it came out). From memory, it was a pretty good game but I'm not sure how it holds up. If it's cheap I'd go for it. I remember it being quite a unique game.

Oooh, it's going to be on PC!  Awesome!

Wii U is going to have to do something pretty cool with the gamepad or there's little chance I'm buying it on the U.

I have never heard of Eternal Darkness, but this game looks flipping SWEET! What in the world are those monsters with the green glowing eyes?

It looks absolutely fantastic, and I like the episodic nature of the game, it make sense within the gameplay of Eternal Darkness. I just hope the price of all episodes combined does not end up being more than that of a full retail game.

I'm disappointed that its on the bandwagon for this crowd source funding.

So if I donate to get the game made, I'll get a copy for free right? Ugh. And didn't they say they need $1.5M just for a pilot chapter or something? Yikes.

The reason for crowd-funding is this:

The primary reason to crowdfund Shadow of the Eternals is because it allows us to work directly with our fans, and gain valuable feedback in developing the project. We can develop a rapport with our audience that would otherwise be difficult in a traditional setting. Secondly, the games industry is currently in a state in which publishers no longer take chances on a project like this. We feel that the best way to bring this title to the public is to release it independently.Precursor Games

And if you donate $50 to the campaign, you get the entire first season of twelve episodes for free. That's $4 per episode, so you're probably getting a little bit of a discount.

Honestly, with the track record of Silicon Knights at this point, they probably HAD to do it this way. They say that publishers don't take risks like this anymore, but this specific developer would be a greater risk than a lot of other devs.

depends on the level. for $5, you get just the pilot, provided it comes out. for $50, you get season 1(episodes 1-12).

not to mention, there's a good chance they already tried to get a publisher, but no one was willing to do it.

They probably went to Nintendo first. They'd be stupid not to. And for some reason Nintendo said no, yet Precursor still decided to go with the WiiU as the primary console.

My guess is that they assume that Nintendo fans will be most willing to donate and most likely to jump on the game once it's released. And it's cheaper than making it for the PS4 and next XBox. Still seems like a weird decision, though.

considering the state of the wii u, i'd think nintendo would have jumped on it, but i guess not. profit or not, the wii u NEEDS games.

Exactly what I was thinking. People would be even MORE excited about it if they knew Nintendo were involved. And as an exclusive, it would be a system seller for a certain segment of gamers.

my only thought is that they were insistent on it being for pc as well, perhaps?
