An SKU phase-out in a major American retailer could be the first sign of new Wii package bundles, or even new colours, if a website exclusive news-tip is to be believed.

The site, Neowin, printed the following;

Nintendo's hugely popular Wii console has entered the internal status of 'early warning' of a major American retail outlet, meaning the current stock-keeping unit will start being phased out within 90 days and will be replaced, shortly there after, by a newer SKU.

A trusted source with access to internal documents has given Neowin this exclusive story. It remains to be seen whether this development is due to new bundles being released or perhaps coloured versions of the Wii, but the current SKU will definitely begin to be removed from sales channels within 90 days.

Given that Wii consoles barely stay on store shelves for more than an hour, a new colour or game pack-in wouldn't really be needed for any more public interest, but then again, Nintendo aren't exactly the most predictable of manufacturers.

Have your say on this rumour below.

I have heard something similar.

My friend who works at best buy says that they are discontinuing the current version of the wii for some reason or at least their systems say that it has been discontinued.

Didn't someone already say that the store was Wal Mart? I dunno, i've heard this story before.

90 days gives them until about the end of August. Imagine at E3 Nintendo announces a Wii with more memory(or something) and then says it will be out in less then 4 weeks time! That would cause a buzz.

I'm just being creative though.:P

They're probably just replacing the Wiis with a version with up-to-date software (including all those updates we've downloaded and installed so far).

I dont thik it will be a new hardware version, although more memory and DVD playing would be welcome.

I hope they don't make changes, I liked Nintendo because they didn't screw over early adopters like Microsoft and Sony.

Ya they are making the new compact Wii Pocket, then a Wii Color, eventually a Wii Advanced, a Wii Advanced SP, perhaps a brighter version of the Wii Advanced SP later, and inevitably a Wii Micro.

Why would you want Nintendo to not make a better Wii? It's been a year and a half, so don't whine about it. Besides, they may just have new colors coming out. Even though I have a Wii, I think it would be great to have a better version out, soon.

Nintendo always screws over early adopters with their portables. Just looks at Gameboy, GBA, and the DS. What's to say they won't do it with Wii too?

Ick how could you say that. Consoles used to be something you bought, and then all you had to do was get new software. It it's something other than new colors, or maybe a different pack-in, I'll be really upset. A Wii with a larger hard drive would be exactly what I need, and I don't want to get another Wii :(.

Exactly, no one wants to replace their perfectly functioning Wii for another one with a few more features. Nintendo should either enable USB hard drives or SD card booting or release their own storage solution. A whole new Wii with more storage is not necessary, especially if Nintendo thinks only a small percentage of users are having problems with available space.

Well... I don't believe they have ever done that to their home consoles. Hopefully they'll continue the trend and just release new colors and then later have it come bundled with stuff. I still have my original DS Phat and I have held off on buying the new one. I'll be waiting for the next iteration to see if it's worth my money.

well nes and snes had a smaller redesign no real change as far as functionallity, same for gba ds , gb ,, thus you dont need to buy those,

but there was talk of a wii with dvd functions that could be a need or it MIGHT NOT BE depends on person i have dvd players already , so no i wont need it

many of nintendos consoles since n64 has had only color changes

aside from the removal of a port on the back of the gc , there was no change in functions for n64 snes or gc, i know the top loading nes is better then the slot loading one but ya if a wii does come , dont expect a microsoft like change,

If they give the new wii the tools to do the job (more memory) and at the same time allow us to upgrade for a reasonable price so that our wiis can now do the job (hard drive, full SD support), isn't that a good thing? I mean they are hardly likely to make the 20m units already sold obselete are they????

Personally I hope they do a RAM upgrade and add another processor along with a 40GB HD and with a fully functional mediaplayer - also available as a USB add on for us existing owners. They need to make the wii "next gen" IMO

No, anything more than a cosmetic update (new color, new shape) is bad news for those of us who have already invested in Wiis. Real internal changes (such as more RAM) can keep old Wiis from playing new Wii games; forcing us to re-commit and buy a new system. Personally, I don't think I'm up for that. Cost of living is increasing, can't be blowing money re-investing in a system I've already purchased once.

The Wii is perfectly fine, and already a next gen console under my definition. It's the only one doing anything new, anyway.

If they release a new Wii with bigger storage space, then I'm going to be mad at Nintendo, or at least if they do that or they make a HD. But my guess is that there putting HD's in the bundle, seems to be like Nintendo heard our crys for no memory.

This should be a welcome tidbit of news for wii owners, of the current SKU of course, if this new SKU does have more memory then that opens the doorway for the rest of us to have the option of a higher capacity external HDD... possibly.

I think a Wii with a HD is perfect. If you can't afford it, then don't buy it. This storage problem is going to be HUGE! I'm already done with Wiiware and the VC. I don't feel like wasting my time taking off games and then putting them back on. No. If Nintendo wants people like me to spend any money at on on WiiWare, they will have to solve that problem.

I don't think that Nintendo will release a new console anytime soon, however, I doubt the Wii will last 5 years. The graphics are already maxed out, there are storage issues, and the Wiimote is not nearly as precise as it should be. I think a Wii 2 would be good by 2009 or 2010.

This has got me really scared. It would be just like Nintendo to come in at E3 and say "guess what? we solved the storage problem... but you have to buy a new console to reap the benefits". If this is the case (without the release of an external HDD) then Nintendo truly doesn't care about their loyal customers.

I love everything about the system. But they could improve on 2 major areas. First more storage. I dont know if they need to come out with a bigger hard drive or if they can make memeory cards that the system can save, load, and read game saves off of. ANd the only other thing that I would hope for is at least 720p. WIth the other systems being HD quality. I was a little dissapointed when I heard there was only 480p.

Personally, I would not be very happy if Nintendo came out with a revamped Wii. To me, that really doesn't make very much sense. Nintendo wanted to make the Wii affordable to everyone. Why would they already be coming out with a newer more costly Wii? My thoughts are that the Wii will be sold with an external hard drive and separate external hard drives will be available for current Wii owners. I think that would make much more sense than discontinuing the old and replacing it with more expensive units.

I doubt it's a new hardware version. And I won't be very happy if it is, unless it's something that I can also get a hold of without buying a new console.

IMO, consoles should be built right the first time with enough foresight to last their predetermined life span. There shouldn't be a need for other versions.

they've had images of Wii's with those colors since before the Wii even launched back in '06.... if it finally comes out, i guess that's great, but it won't affect me at all.... I just wish I could've got a black one... but its way too late now.

Nintendo released a new NES in about 1994 which was Top Loading similar to the SNES, and then the next year Nintendo released an SNES that looked exactly like the Redesigned NES.
