DSi was just released this year, however the DS system has been in the market for 5 years now. Do you think nitendo will update handheld w/ a new handheld that boast better graphics, and new functionality? Sony seems to be sticking w/ the psp, so maybe nitendo will stick w/ DS for a few more years. However what would u want to see in new handheld?

I don't care about graphics. What I want to see is even more RPGs. I just can't get enough of them....

The DSi just came out.

I'd give Nintendo five more years for something "brand-new".

Nintendo already reported months ago that they got rid of the project because the DS lite sold so well. There's no new hand held anytime soon.

Pretty sure the DSi is like the SP, so I would think in 2011 or 2012 a new handheld will be out. Nintendo wants to stretch the DS's lifespan out and it's pretty easy to consider why. It's one of the best systems.

looks like the "Wii HD" flu finally arrived the DS boards... if they're selling like water, why would they make a new handheld?

Fix'd.

Anyway, considering the DSi's salesand the fact that it's much more sustainable than the other models, I can't see the DS going anywhere for a while.

The release of the DSi shows that we'll be playing the Nintendo DS for some time. Eventually they'll release a new system, but with the success of the DSi they'll get the most out of it before it happens. I don't think another update will happen for the current handheld so my guess is that the next time we see a new handheld it will be the successor of the DS.

I guess only two things might affect Nintendo to produce a new handheld.

Nintendo`s rivals produces a new gen handheld with top notch technology and this same handheld start eating a huge share of the market (hard to happen, but not impossible.)

DSi starts exploding everywhere giving the sucesfull brand a bad name (even harder to happen, but not impossible.)

Other than that, expect something new only around 2012-2013.

Good thing the world will be ending around then, eh?

I really don't want to have to purchase another system unless it's incredible.

No, they reported they canceled the project a few years before DSi was even out, so the way I wrote it was right.

That is correct. I had watched a vid about the article stating otherwise. What the article does say is that the DSi was released because it couldbetter sustain their momentum. Either way it makes no difference. The new handheld was canned and there won't be a need for a new one any time soon.

Hmm, I dont think 5 years, maybe 3, possibly sooner than that, technology comes around pretty fast, but at anytime something new could be released, nobody other than the makers of the system can tell for sure

Nintendo claims they have their new handheld ready, but won't announce it because the DSi is doing so well.

Atleast that's what G4 said at E3. I find that hard to believe...

well i certainly hope so, seeing my DSi as more of a GBA SP to the GBA

i'd think fall 2010 would be ok to announce it, coming out in summer 2011.

i'd hope at least a good ARM CPU @ 400Mhz to 600Mhz

32MB to 64MB system RAM, 4MB-16MB VRAM, one big touch screen that runs DS games in BC by spliting the wide 4 inch screen, slide out buttons.

i'd be happy if they annoucned a true nex gen DS today actually, or Game Boy Evolution or whatever

new tech has nothing to do with it really, it will still have touch, maybe not two screens though

nintendo handhelds, esspecially the DS have never simply changed because of tech, they've been pathetic in terms of tech

the DSi and DS are pathetic my mobile device tech standards of 2004

Before anyone goes and writes off the next Nintendo hand-held, remember....this is Nintendo we are talking about. I remember long arguments on these very forums before the DSi was announced and how 95% of the people arguing were saying how Nintendo would never do such a thing with the DS lite still selling so well. Look at the history of the Gameboy/DS platform. With the exception of the 6 year lull between the original Gameboy and the Gameboy Play It Loud! versions, Nintendo hasn't gone more than 3 years without updating. (usually two years, and in some cases as little as one year) The DSi came out in Japan in 2008. Judging by their past and fitting into the 2-3 year window, its reasonable to conclude that Nintendo will have an update or a new hand-held by 2010/2011.

Nah, I think Nintendo will be sticking with the DS/DSi longer than they did with any of their other handhelds.

The DSi is outselling Hot Cakes right now, it wouldn't make any sense for us or Iwata for the new one to be released.

Since the DS is doing well enough, and is powerful fun for all games made for it, there is little reason at this point to upgrade it except for more horse power, since there's not much new tech out and about that could improve it, at the moment. I think Nintendo might try to wait for OLEDs to be refined and mass produced, which may happen in the next few years. But more so, they'd want to wait for flexible screens are circuit boards. that would allow them to create a highly portable device with a large screen....though who knows if touch tech would be possible so soon on something like that? Well, that's my two bits.

I know there is still so much potential left to be tapped in the DS itself, like with Scribblenauts, but a new console with GameCube or better graphics and physics, better online gaming, better multimedia functions, better hardware,

I mean the new Zune HD is launching with Nvidia Tegra, which has been projected to clock in at between 600Mhz and 1Ghz. On a mobile platform the size of the iPod touch. .33 inch thin. thats here in 2009, in 2011 or 2012 it could be so much better (also Tegra is suppose to be such a great CPU for mobile devices that it will give this new Zune 50 plus hours of Audio playback and 10-15 hours of 480x272 Video playback)

Can you imagine what tech advances will happen between now and 2011? And don't forget we'll be lucky if nintendo's hardware is anywhere near the tech of the time.

Once, before their consoles started losing, they would push hardware to the max (N64 and GCN launched both with impressive hardware for the time) Now, not so much. Why would they? its been making them money not pushing hardware.

So in 2012 when we have mobile fones, mobile gaming devices like Walkmans, Ipods, Zunes with 1-2Ghz CPUs, 512MB to 1GB of RAM ( there have been Tablets with those kinda of specs with 5-7 inch screens) we will be lucky if whatever new Nintendo handheld at the time is twice as powerful as the DS itself

I want to see something with ONE screen. Honestly having two screens isn't that great of an idea. You can only focus on one at a time... Also better graphics. Maybe a built in motion sensor. And of course, great games!

Not just DSi owners, but anyone who recently bought a DS of any sort. The DSi's success makes it seem like it would last quite a while. It would be foolish of Nintendo to replace it any time soon. Do you have any idea how fast it's selling?

What does that have to do with anything? Nintendo completely explained themselves on the topic of the DSi. That argument is irrelevant. In case you didn't know, the DSi is LITERALLY selling TWICE AS FAST as the DS Lite. Nintendo would be out of their minds if they were to even think about hurting that.

In this day and age, Nintendo could have had a very superior portable system that would have amazing graphics. The fact that they're doing stuff like adding 0.3 megapixels cameras instead of this makes me ashamed sometimes :/

Your argument that Nintendo would somehow hurt themselves(or alienate customers) by upgrading their hand-held in 2-3 years is the same argument that people were using on these forums last year when the DSi rumors hit. As you said yourself...the DSi is selling twice as fast, therefore making your argument irrelevant. They've had a 2-3 year release window for upgrades/new hand-helds since 1995. More importantly they have strong competition now from the likes of Apple and Sony in the portable gaming arena. Both of those companies do upgrades to their systems every year. So no, I don't believe the DSi is gonna be around for longer than 3 years without another refresh or new system. With it selling so fast, that just means the market is going to be saturated again. Isn't that why they released the DSi? The sales of the DS lite was leveling off in the Japanese market so they released this upgrade to boost sales again. Its that very same Japanese market that will determine another upgrade. (not saying it will be a totally new system...might just be another rehash like the DSi was to the Lite and the Lite was to the Phat) I could be wrong...who knows really? Its all just speculation at this point. I am however going to base my decision on Nintendo's history of updates and the fact that technology/other companies will push them forward.

That's what I meant by "that argument is irrelevant". The people who presented that argument were misinformed. Most of the points were nonexistent. I'll tell ya the rest later.
