Play DOR and if you like it go back and play the others. That is what I did after DS. If you do end up playing them, you've got a lot of gaming to do!

There is a completely new storyline in DoR, so you don't have to play the other games to understand it. The learning curve is a bit higher in this game though, but you'll get used to it quickly.

All 3 of the earlier AV games are good turn based strategy war games. If you believe you would like that type of game, I can highly recommend all 3 of the earlier games. DoR will probably be great too, I just have not played it yet to recommend it to you.

I'm new to the series as well. After I beat Phantom Hourglass I was looking for a new DS game. Saw this at Target, decided to buy it. When I started playing it, I was hooked. I got to play 1 online match was fun, but enddeed up losing. I didn't notice my DS was low on battery lol.

If you buy the new one, you won't miss much from the old ones. The new Advance Wars is a totally overhauled version of the older ones, but still with the same awesome gameplay. Dual Strike was good and had more content overall, but Days of Ruin makes Dual Strike better, but just has a little less content. The map editor in Days of Ruin is much better and more intuitive, and you can save up to 50 user-created maps.

So yeah, if you haven't played this game before, you obviously need to right away (unless you completely despise challenging strategy games) :D

I highly recommend the series. Allthough I was a little disappointed with DS, I loved the 2 for GBA. I haven't played DoR yet, but it's on my list.

Since DOR just came out, I say go check it out first. If you like it, then try to hunt down Dual Strike. It's not really that important that you get the others if you have these two.
