So yeah it's pretty much a gamecube controller that you plug the wiimote into. I wonder if they are planing anything other than easier backwards compatibility for it.

its perfectly possible its just a space issue, because gamecube games are 1.35gb in space, but most games can be shrunk to a fraction of that, animal crossings is only about 25gm luigis mansion is about 300mb skies of arcadia is only aboy 1gb in size sonic adventure 2 battle someting under 700mb. it would be nice but i dont see it happening because many people still have there gamecube games not many people have there n64s or snes or nes ect.Ooooooh. Here's a thought...more of a dream really, but
gamecube games on the VC? Though I don't think thats even possible.

the Wii only has 512 mb A GC game is 1-2 GB.

No, it's perfectly IMpossible
The Wii isn't strong enough to run Gamecube games
Heck, it's almost not strong enough to run N64 games correctly.

It's not strong enough to play them... yet I play them everyday.

No, you don't
You're not playing Gamcube games from data files, you're playing them from disk, astronomical difference.
Everything old gen on the Wii is emulated which means (as I said) that N64 games are the limit, anything else and the Wii is too weak.
Throw Gamecube games on the service and oops, no play Gamecube!

The Wii doesn't emulate GC games, it has the hardware inside. These games are not emulated because as Jaysonguy said, the Wii isn't powerful enough to emulate GC games. In fact it is not even close to being powerful enough to emulate GC games.

Arc2012
Huh, why would they need a GC shell for that? It could have been done from day one, since the Wii is compatible with GC controllers. But it's not gonna happen.

y cant u stick it in the side? It would look odd the other way around. Tjeremiah1988
Probably to keep the pointer.
I don't like the idea of the Wiimote sticking out. It looks cheap and lame.
It's not gonna happen, neither is GC on VC, that's more likely to be next next-gen.
Ninty are too protective over their software so they wouldn't allow playing from external devices, internal only, sorry.

You should look for the DS patents. None of them look like the DS. A patent is supposed to represent the IDEA, not necessarily the product.

Rocky32189
Indeed. Even the most powerful computers on the market have issues that make Gamecube emulation not even worth trying.

Iono what u ppl talkin about this looks real
i really dont actually care about this product
i just hope that since the wii will have yet another "normal" controller like the virtual console controller itll persuade game makers to port soul caliber 4 and call of duty 4 to wii
I hope its wirseless, uses the speaker, the rumble (compatible with all games, and works for everything such as VC, GC, and any Wii games that use it.
Please finally have a proper classic controller.
demontium
wud be better if you had a choice to play any game with that..or the wiimote/nunchuck
I thought it might be a new handheld system ala Gameboy GC or something.
Maybe they just didn't show the screen in the patent. Could also use touch screen...
I know that's pretty far fetched, but I would buy a a Handheld GC for 50$ haha

Actually downloading and playing Gamecube games as VC is perfectly possible. The console does not need to emulate anything it has the gamecube hardware already, all that needs to be done is for the console to act as if the file downloaded (the gamecube game)is a disc in the drive and play it using the hardware 'not' emulating it. And how do i know it is possible? because on the homebrew scene there is ALREADY a way to put gamecube games on the SD card 'as files' and play them as if they were virtual console games, perfectly fine. IF the wii had enough space to store them YOU COULD even make gamecube channels on the homebrew scene, just like virtual console. Unfortunatley you cannot play channels stored on sd card so untill they give us a hardrive only way is by launching off the SD.
It's not really new ... the patent submission was in 2005. Nothing more than the original idea for a CIassic Controller. That is all I got from this.
Not that I would usually want to back Jaysonguy ... but he is right. The Wii CANNOT Emulate GC games through the VC. With enough space, they might be able to do what the 360 does with XBox games, but that would require a remake of the game to run like a WiiWare game would (as in coded specifically for the Wii).

Well, with the "Classic Controller" they are giving us now, you are right. There should be a choice.
