After the disaster that Sonic 4 is Sega's really counting on this game
They can't afford to have 2 awful games from Sonic this holiday season

almost every lead Reviewer gave Sonic 4 great reviews in the 9s and 8s.
Gamespot is in the Minority of giving Sonic 4 a 6.5 or lower.
I wonder what Colors will bring.
I am definitely looking forward to this game. I don't think Sonic Colors getting AA reviews across the board is too much of a long shot.
yep. they're usually spot on with their reviews. which reminds me... i think wii party scored a 67 there *checks* 61 actually. for the japanese version, which they claim they couldn't play the "weird mode with a globe". i have to get this month's edition to see the american/UK scores though. Is NGamer to be trusted?

Only because of the name. No way in hell did it deserve those scores. If you compare Sonic 4 to the Mega Drive titles, it sucks hard. I dont even need to explain why. Hell, Sonic 4 is the worst 2D Sonic game for a VERY long time. You'd have to go back as far as the Advance titles to find a worse 2D Sonic, and even they're arguably better! If you review Sonic 4 based on its own merits, it's merely an insanely short game you can(and will) beat in one sitting with very little reason to go back. It's not even consistantly good throughout that one sitting to completion for crying out loud! Add to that the high price and you've got a meh downloadable platformer and there are a lot better games to spend money on.Colours on the other hand is exceeding expectations in every single way. Sonic Colours is the big comeback for the series. Sonic Colours is probably going to be one the best games of the year and the best Sonic game ever.
I think Sega finally making not only one, but two good Sonic games is a sign of the apocalypse.I think that Sega finally knew what they want and if they continue this way, Sonic is going to catch up with Mario and maybe surpass him (you know...cuz he's faster) :P

Sonic 4 is the Weakest of the 2D Sonic Games?
I've only played the Trial version but the 1st level felt like every Sonic Level 1.
The only thing I would take point off for is the fact that the Game takes awhole lot off of Sonic 1 a lot.
Then again this is Episode 1 which makes me think that with Episode 2 they'll add Tails and the other Emerald Mini Game and Episode 3 which will add Knuckles and the last Emerald Mini Game.
But so far Episode 1 so far for me isn't bad nor the Worst Sonic 2D Game, IMO that's probably Sonic 1.
These guys gave Mario Bros Wii 85% they aren't afraid to give their main franchise scores like that so this is telling you something. It looks a good effort.

I dont remember constant automated gameplay in every level of Sonic 1. You've only played the trial version, and from the sounds of it you dont exactly have a very good memory of the Mega Drive Sonic games. First of all, there's the awful physics. In 1991 Sega had this genius idea. They decided that that would incorporate proper rolling physics and proper momentum in to the game. If you are rolling on a slope, you'll get faster just as a ball would on a slope in real life. In Sonic 4 if you turn in to a ball you actually get SLOWER! That's just stupid. Then you've got jumping momentum, which is pretty much non-existant in Sonic 4. The second you let go of the d-pad you'll drop straight down instead of allowing momentum to carry you where you need. This means jumping isn't as precise as it was and platforming wont be as good, which is probably why there's only actually one or 2 proper platforming sections in the entire game! You know what, just take a look at this video. This demonstrates how crap the physics are compared to the classics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6-1cGzPn3ESonic 4 doesn't deserve too be mentioned in the same breath as even Sonic 1, let alone the rest of the classic games. The level design is all very automated, complete with spriings and boosters EVERYWHERE! One particular torch puzzle in Loast Labyrinth is beyond stupid as well. On top of that the game has a complete lack of non widescreen support. On my non widescreen TV I can see barely anything in front of me because Sonic is so far to the right. That's not a problem though, because the game is so automated I dont even need to see what's in front of me!

Um I do not know about you, but Sonic 4 can breath the same breath. The momentum is there, the platforming is there, and when you turn into a ball on a slope you do go faster. The only thing is gravity code sets the speed to slow after a small period of time. Also mate, you are way over exaggerating the springs and dashes, because there is about the same amount as there was in the classics.
Bottom line: It's better than Sega's recent crap infested games that we know, AND it's just as hard as Sonic 1 was in all sense of the words. They did this game right, it gets a thumbs up from me.

maybe you would have enjoyed the game more is you had... well... PLAYED it CORRECTLY. who lets go of the D-pad while playing anyways? that guys arguments would be valid if the game wasn't designed to be a faster game. sonic has never been about precision, and personally, I think that they did a decent job with what they had. yea, Its not exactly like the original sonic, but guess what? get over it. I've been playing sonic games for about 16 years, and I can most assuredly tell you that I am not disappointed with sonic 4, and that's because im not a nitpicky person when it come to an actually pretty fun game. Also, that lost labyrinth puzzle is not bad at all.[QUOTE="Pierst179"]
There is still one month left for the game's release and a review is already out?! That is odd. :?

Yeah exactly, it's a bit early for a review.
reviewing before the game is out so people can choose whether to buy it or not. review copies always arrive before the official release. BTW...this man is wise.Just to let you guys know... Ngamer is the greatest Videogame magazine ever made.

Obviously it's better when reviews come out before the game's released but this is ridiculous. A week or two fine but not a month, how can that not seem odd to you?

I wouldn't say they accurately described the game. reviewing it so early is questionable though.
I don't think I've even heard of NGamer or if I have I've never payed much attention to them. I trust Gametrailers, IGN and of course Gamespot, and I can't think of any game that they've reviewed over a month early either. Seems like NGamer's just trying to get their opinion heard first and that's not the point of making a review.
Where did I say I was suspcious either? :? I'm simply stating that there's no reason to review a game over a month early. I've had nothing but high expectations for Sonic Colors. I've played and beat Sonic Unleashed 100%. I know how much fun the day stages are so I know I can expect good things from Sonic Colors. And I feel more comfortable reading/watching reviews from sites I know and trust, not that reviews justify my decision to purchase a game, I make my own decisions. Sonic Colors isn't a bad game either.

you're suspicious of NGamer, not the game. you probably never heard of them because they're a magazine. a british magazine. which also happens to have a brazilian version. just like EDGE. and the fact that they're a magazine is yet another reason why they got their hands in the game earlier. when you can only publish stuff once in a month, it's better if you publish them as soon as possible. What you mean to say is "Does NGamer share my opinion of games generally? In which case, you wouldn't know unless you followed them. Asking them if they can be trusted is to suggest they might lie or something.Raiko101
No what I mean to say is, are they a crappy magazine like GI. People have already answered my question.
No no its all good, they can pretend these games don't exist if they are bad like they are doing with past Sonic games. ;) I love picking on Sonic and Sega, such big easy targets. After the disaster that Sonic 4 is Sega's really counting on this game

The problem with Sonic 4 Episode 1 is that it doesn't know what time frame it wants to be in. Let's give it current gen graphics and motion controls, yet go back to its own roots and what supposively made Sonic so great. As a result: Sonic 4 is considered dated. I understand the "nostalgia" like Mega Man 9 / 10, but the difference they went all out and made it totally retro. Sonic 4 is stuck in between the past and present and therefore is unfortunately a mess. wiifan001Nope. Here's the thing. Classic Sonic is NOT dated. Sonic 4 plays considerably worse than the 16 bit games. Sonic 4 could easily have played as an outstanding sequel as good as the classic series whilst having certain modern elements. The gameplay of Sonic 4 just isn't anywhere as good as the classic Sonic games. It's nothing to do with them being dated. There is no franchise from that era that holds up as well as the Sonic games.
Sega had two options. They could have gone the Megaman 9 route and gone all 16 bit. This would have worked for Sonic no question. The other option is to go the NSMB route. Retain the same basic gameplay but include modern things like todays graphics, some new moves and improved gameplay. This would have worked for Sonic. Unfortunately Sega chose secret option C. A cheap downloadable game with significantly worse physics, controls, level design, less characters, power-ups, levels and bonus stages than the true sequel to that series should have. It throws in classic references simply for nostalgic value. It has NSMB type things with the improved graphics and it does add one new move, but when they take away so many things Sonic 3 had, that one new move is no longer an advancement. NSMB didn't regress. Sonic 4 did.
