the 3ds is strictly not an infants toy keep out of reach of minors under (but not including) the age of 7

no tikes with a 3ds got that.. their eyes havent developed enough to handle 3d technologies at work in the handheld and have been causing the ceasing of eye developement beyond that age range (in short your eyes would stop growth and developement after age 6)

those still wanting an infant to use it are strongly recommended to cut the 3ds to normal 2d mode in the configuration settings to reduce the risk of eye damage.

nintendo's use of a 2d mode in the 3ds is there strictly for this reason as in testing it has been quite common to see it happen which is the reason for the concern.

so in short the following is a big no no

I wonder how relatively bad (or good) the 3DS is on the eyes of children compared to, say, watching 437895734 hours of television.

does anyone really use parental controls for ANYTHING? i swear it's just that it sounds like a stupid feature. if you're the parents, you don't have to bother limiting your son's system to T games and under. YOU'RE THE PARENT, you can just go and say "you're not gonna play this any time soon, kiddo" and NOT LET HIM BUY IN THE FIRST PLACE. /rant

But can kids under the age of 6 really use any hand held game let alone a 3DS? Last time I played Golden Sun at my baby cousin's house (who is 5 by the way) he took the game out of my DS and tried to SWALLOW it. I don't think you should trust someone with a hand held gaming system, who is also likely to try and eat the $35 games.

eh, there are a number of studies that provide evidence that 3D has no effect on eye development, but I guss Nintendo is going the better safe than sorry route; cant say I blame them.

I'm not even sure if this is medically accurate but it seems like Nintendo is just trying to limit and avoid lawsuits.

Haha. That made me chuckle.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I had no idea. I have a toddler who likes to watch me play games. Going to make sure he does not look on when I get the 3DS.

Not trying to sound offensive but thats a stupid kid. When I was five I was playing A Link to the Past on SNES and Final Fantasy VII on PS1 which are semi-complicated games for a five year old.

Yeah he isn't a very smart, but exposing your child to a development stumping piece of technology isn't either. I'd take my stupid cousin over a cousin with sight problems.

This.

There are far too many idiots these days that lack common sense and sue over the silliest of things. It is this very reason why coffee shops are REQUIRED to put HOT COFFEE on drinks. You know, just incase the person wasn't aware that the coffee came from a kettle or machine that is extremely hot to human contact. Same reason parents blame everyone for their poor abilities to raise and monitor their children. Little Jimmy wants a 3DS, but it says it's dangerous! But it will keep him distracted while we ignore him and play farmville all day! Little Jimmy is going blind? Lawsuit!

All games have warnings on them saying to take breaks and so forth, but noone listens to them :P. I am a tad worried about the 3D hurting my eyes, but I doubt it will and I am not buying the 3DS for it anyway.

people have always been dumb and no one is an exception, but still the human race is advancing. Einsteins IQ was below 80, and he failed a grade in elementary school. thats why his theory is still a THEORY(kind of like all science). but he still got things done, he was just a slow thinker. so i would worry more about 2012 or international bankers taking over the world... or maybe Hitlers long lost offspring.
