Scaleform, Kynapse and HumanIK to be available for next-gen games

Nintendo has agreed a deal with Autodesk to license the middleware firm's tech to developers working on Wii U titles, it has been revealed.

Licensed Wii U studios can now gain access to Gameware products such as interface development software Scaleform, AI tool Kynapse and character animation tech HumanIK.

Nintendo's next-gen home console is anticipated to launch later this year.

"Autodesk Gameware technology is used by the industry's elite development teams and has been adopted across the industry," said Autodesk SVP Marc Petit.

"Through our relationships with key companies like Nintendo, we can put our solutions into the hands of more game developers. Adopting Autodesk Gameware helps streamline the production process, freeing more resources for innovation in new areas.

"This shift in development focus will help make the next-generation of titles more compelling than the last."

It sounds good developers can now try new ideas in games because the production process is going to be streamlined.

Can anyone with technical knowhow explain to simpletons like me what this means for the Wii U and games? Like, PR banter aside, what benefit is this adding? :( :P

Scaleform is used to create user interface like creating the Hud and 3d menus. Kynapse is for AI it makes the AI seem more life-like it was used in the Witcher 2 and Batman Arkham City. HumanIK is used to try to make the animations seem more believable.

Interesting, but expected. I'm sure Nintendo will be on top of all the latest development tools and technologies, it a must if they want to be relevant in the multiplat market, which is a must for them to compete this time. Wii Sports was lightning in a bottle, I don't see that happening twice.

I'm inclined to agree, but I am still excited none-the-less.

There's an explanation on the first page, complete with examples of its use.

At highschool, on Auto Desk Inventor (2009, I think) I made a mini gun on it...unfortunately I didn't know how to animate the stuff...so yeah.

This is exciting news to me. I wonder how the new interface to the WiiU will be when it releases. A part of me really just hopes that only WiiRemote Plus or Motion Plus is supported rather than the original Wii Remote (for WiiU games). I don't feel that the technology of the original Wii Remotes really stand up to the technology of future games.

As long as you have the M+ attachment you can still use them. And the normal controller should still be playable with Wii games, M+ is just for motion controlled games developed for WiiU, assuming those will exist.
