In my opinion, and I think it's fairly valid, the Wii can not be a success if Nintendo does not start producing more GC controllers. Sure nothing is going to stop it being profitable, but for hardcore gamers, and gamers who never had a gamecube, the continued production of Gamecube controllers is vital for enjoyment of the Wii.
Think about it, so far 3 high class games all practically require the use of gamecube controllers, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii (confirmed to use GC pads today), and Metal Slug Anthology all require gamecube pads, these games simply won't be as fun or accesible without them by a long margin. Any competetive smash bros play will have to use GC pads, Mario Kart probably won't work well at all with motion controled steering (not accurate enough), and metal slug can't be played with a suitable control scheme without Gamecube controllers.
Ontop of this, backwards compatibility with the gamecube is all but pointless for anyone who didn't own a gamecube as they can't buy controllers any more, and even those who did have a GC, the controllers are starting to wear out after so many years. Ontop of that a number of Virtual Console games play far better with a GC pad, including nearly every N64 game. We add the later WiiWare games, which can also support GC controllers, and the problem gets even worse.
All up, the Gamecube controller is one of the most important peripherals for the Wii, in some regards it could be argued as more important then the Wiimote itself as it is required for some of the greatest Wii games, and for proper Virtual Console play and backward compatibility. If Nintendo can't handle the production of three controllers, why did they even bother with the Classic Controller? I use the GC controller far more then it, and with the ability to reconfigure the GC button config in classic games, the Classic Controller would be nearly unnecessary.
I know this was a long rant, but I honestly believe Nintendo has to start producing these controllers again, they're now impossible to find in Australia, and new ones are becoming increasingly rare on Ebay. It'd be great if we could get a company such as IGN in contact with Nintendo and yell at them a bit to make them see reason, but I dunno how we'd even go about that : /
