Imo, Nintendo has been on a roll recently. There was a period there where the games were just so-so. Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime 2 are good examples, to me. Prime 2 just wasn't worth beating to me, and Sunshine was a massive disappointment.
But recently, the new Zelda, new Metroid, new Mario, new Brawl, new Mario Kart, new game with 'Wii' in the title... They've all been pretty freaking awesome. So I think Nintendo should see if they can spread the love of the awesome games to other franchises that have kind of been in the dark for awhile, or just don't have a Wii rendition.
Suggestions for this: Star Fox, F-Zero, Animal Crossing, EarthBound, Kid Icarus, Pikmin, and Donkey Kong. These could all turn out spectacular and much different from Nintendo's norm. There's a lot of potential in these franchises that hasn't been tapped in quite some time. Or alternately Nintendo should really get one more franchise going with real fighting involved, if they're going for the hardcore crowd. Because if you look at it, Zelda, Metroid and Brawl are the only games alive with real fighting involved (Mario hardly counts, but then, Galaxy was amazing).
This could help Smash out too. The devs said themselves Nintendo hasn't made a game franchise with fighting characters since Pikmin, which is why they added third party characters in. Kid Icarus could fit the bill, for that matter.
That's not to say I don't want a new Zelda :) but more franchises to look forward to could be a major asset to bringing in the hardcore crowd, which is currently the Wii's only real issue. And that could even lead to third parties putting more effort into Wii titles, and not giving us lousy PS2 ports that look worse than Gamecube games (*cough* Guitar Hero *cough*). Let's get this snowball rolling, big N!
