Today Nintendo trademarked the name Zii, almost flat out saying there will be a new console soon. Here's the link.

Wouldnt hurt to be more creative with names, but i dont think its a new console - its something else.

Look at Nintendo's Past -
Nintendo Entertainment System = Brand Name + What It Does
Super Nintendo Entertainment Sys. = Brand Name + What It Does with "Super" added on
Nintendo 64 = AGAIN, the Brand Name + 64 because it's 64-bit
Gamecube = A cube that plays games
Nintendo Wii = WTF?

Yeah Wii was a U-Turn in the console naming direction, but it was something new. Now look at Zii - they just changed W to a highter letter. Even Wii 2 would be better.I admit my very first console was the original Nintendo Entertainment System and have been loyal going with the SNES, N64 and the Gamecube, and even got the wii,but the wii... just doesn't feel the same as it did back then... and if the zii is the next nintendo console, i'll probably skip it completely. I sadly say that I do believe Nintendo is going to fade out going the way of sega.
first, it's just a patent, just like that weird horse stuff. second, because it's a patent, it doesn't confirm absolutely anything. maybe they're just trying to get rid of the wii clones, like the "vii" and the "wai" by patenting the names before. third, there's already a topic covering this, even though it has no link...BrunoBRS
That could be true, to get rid of clones..
Who says it's a new console?! :? Don't go crazy on those speculations ok guys?Kenny789
But this is a forum for the Wii and all those who love it. Crazy speculations run through our veins!!! :P

No Nintendo might've gone the way of Sega if it wasn't for the Wii. Besides Ninteno is never going to go the way of Sega. I believe they said when they stop making hardware, they stop making games.

Update: We've done a bit more digging, and it looks as if this here filing may simply be a renewal of a 2006 trademark request. Moreover, we've found Nintendo trademarks in Japan for Cii, Bii, Oii and Yii, so it seems the company may just be on some sort of rampage in order to cover its tracks in one form or another.
i was just about to post this now it seems like a series of games over a console but only time will tellhttp://www.engadget.com/2009/12/15/nintendo-trademarks-zii-over-in-japan-creative-is-like-zaywh/

As the last few posts pointed out, they have also trademarked other similar names. So it seems like what others said before, about trying to get rid of ripoff names could be right.
Even if that wasn't revealed, I wouldn't say this would confirm anything related to a next-gen console. The article even saysNintendo has steadfastly refused rumours that it's preparing a Wii HD, with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently saying that a new console wouldn't be until 'far into the future'."
Congratulations, you just made an assumption and a decision based on a name we don't even know what it stands for.I admit my very first console was the original Nintendo Entertainment System and have been loyal going with the SNES, N64 and the Gamecube, and even got the wii,but the wii... just doesn't feel the same as it did back then... and if the zii is the next nintendo console, i'll probably skip it completely. Clone Wars?
It won't be that, it's been debunked. Nintendo is just preventing new rip offs like the Vii from being made.I'm surprised no one has suggested a new peripheral, I bet that's what the Zii will be.

The Wii was meant to be universal so you didn't have to abbreviate it. It would be known around the world as Wii. No confusion. It is also the same sounding as 'we'. Which was meant to show the gathering of people to play the Wii. The two 'ii's in Wii are meant to be two people playing together. It's all just meant to be for EVERYONE. Us. You. Me. Wii. The title of the console came true. Look at all of the families that play the Wii together. I know my family does. I know many families that do. The name does relate to the console and what it does.it could be Nintendo's Next Handheld. I'm more interested in that than a new console because it's said to have the same name brand chip that powers the PS3.
(Nvidia was it?)

Maybe Nintendo just really likes Charlie the Unicorn...or the next console will be in the shape of a Z. Remember the original design for the XBox, lol.
Just imagine a giant Z with a Nintendo logo on it sitting on your very own futuristic table in a room full of futuristic silver and glass furnishings!

but it's not far from how big the original xbox is...
There are many possibilities for Nintendo to trademark "Zii" in Japan:
a) To prevent Wii imitators from using names similar to the console
b) To use the trademark for a software or hardware feature on the Wii
c) To use the trademark for a game character or game
Well sir you are DEFINITELY mistaken, since sega died out relying on fanboys while nintendo has basically the whole world buying there system.I admit my very first console was the original Nintendo Entertainment System and have been loyal going with the SNES, N64 and the Gamecube, and even got the wii,but the wii... just doesn't feel the same as it did back then... and if the zii is the next nintendo console, i'll probably skip it completely. I'm 90% sure it is related to the new Zelda game, wether it be a new peripherial exclusive to it or a special edition Wii with a zelda paintjob or something else related to zelda. The z even is the same z used in the zelda logo.
Longcat2
Yeah, I agree. To me this seems like it's just the code name they're using for the current zelda project.
Upon further inspection...

They probably trademarked it just to make us freak out. It's probably nothing and their looking at all of us freak out over the interwebz.
But for real, that would be sick if it was just the Wii, but Zelda themed. I don't know why it would have a whole new name, but that would be sick.
Also:
I just thought of this. Remember Majora's Mask had a graphics add-on? Could it be similar to that perhaps? That is required for "Z"elda?

that's like the 6th post pointing out the same thing, and people are still speculating... someone just throw this on the original post...i dont like this whole "_ii" thing they decide to run with now. i think the name "Gamecube" was just amazing. and "Gameboy" also. but now its all DS and _ii stuff and i personally don't like it. doesn't give that nintendo zing and flare that i kind of feel with other names and stuff. something epic is missing. like Nintendo 64 still has an epic ring to its name. the Wii wont when it has become a legacy console.
NINTENDO SIXTY FOOOOOOOOOUR!!!!!! yea, pretty epic when you turn a name into a meme :lol:i dont like this whole "_ii" thing they decide to run with now. i think the name "Gamecube" was just amazing. and "Gameboy" also. but now its all DS and _ii stuff and i personally don't like it. doesn't give that nintendo zing and flare that i kind of feel with other names and stuff. something epic is missing. like Nintendo 64 still has an epic ring to its name. the Wii wont when it has become a legacy console.
