Pushmo, Steel Diver, the Wii series, Endless Ocean, Freakyforms, Captain Rainbow, Excitebots, Rolling Western, Disaster DoC, Rhythm Heaven, Fossil Fighters, FlingSmash, The Last Story, Fluidity, ElectroPlankton, Pandora's Tower, Elite Beat Agents, The Legendary Starfy, Professor Layton, and Xenoblade are all new IPs published by Nintendo in the last 5 years.
I find it funny how you complain about the lack of "new" games, then go on to mention that if they just made F-Zero and Star Fox there would be less complaining...those are both old franchises. Also, have you bothered to look at those games' track records? There's a reason they stopped making games in those series'...they don't sell.
Nintendo is a business, it would be stupid of them to release games that have proven to fail at retail just to please a vocal minority.
Nintendo made more new IPs this gen then any other company.
Nintendo made 80+ new IPs that is just on the DS alone then they made about 20 New IPs on the Wii including Wiiware.
Nintendo also brought back old games like Kid Icarus, Punch Out!!, the Excite series, X, and Sin & Punishment.
Kid Icarus was missing since 1991.
Punch Out!! was missing since 1996 before the Wii game was released.
The Excite series was missing since 2000 before ExciteTruck was released in 2006.
X was Japan only and released in 1992 before X-Scape was released on DSiware.
Sin & Punishment was released in 2000 and it was Japan-only until it released on the Virtual Console then they released Sin & Punishment Star Successor in 2010.
They also brought over a Japan-only series that existed from the 90s Glory of Heracles.
New Franchises? No, we have enough of those.
Old ones that need reboots or sequels? There are plenty of those.
I'm currently playing Pushmo. That classifies as a new franchise right?

But its not Mario so it doesn't count
I.T.T.W.M.U.A (In this thread, we make unnecessary acronyms).
Nintendo has pumped out so many more new IPs than any other company this gen. I certainly wouldn't mind something new that was up to par with their mainstays, but they don't need new IPs just because the ones they do have go unnoticed.
Like FlingSmash?Pushmo/Pullblox came out the other week, and this is a fantastic new franchise.

Y.N.T.L.H. (You Need To Look Harder)
Everyone who doesn't buy a lot of Nintendo products gives Nintendo a hard time because all they know Nintendo makes is Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and sometimes Metroid or Kirby. Sad as it is, even a lot of Nintendo fans make this mistake. But the truth it, as someone said, they have made A LOT more IPs this generation than ANY other company.
The problem with Nintendo is that they have so many classic franchises they can't even make new sequels to some of their old ones, let alone make entirely new IPs. Besides, isn't it basically a new IP if they make a new game starring their known mascots (e.g. Luigi's Mansion) ? Would you really want them to make some entirely new IPs which wouldn't please neither the fans nor others? Nintendo should not try to go for the market Sony and MS try to appeal to because the last thing I would want would be some cheap Halo/KillZone, GT/Forza and Gears of War/Uncharted clones.
That said I would not mind if they made some new IP and if they got some talented devs who would make some fresh IPs for them (that was essentially Rare's role back in the days).
They always bring new ones, which you just tend to overlook, probably on purpose which gives you reason to cry moar. Just lately they brought one excellent puzzle IP and the best home console RPG of this gen. They also have a bigger pool of high quality gaming series than most (if not all) other videogame companies. And series like 3D Mario show more evolution and change in between sequels than all these ,new IPs' this gen that are basically clones of each other. (Yes, shooters)
The real problem: No 3rd Party ever trying to make unique new IPs with a mindset similar to Nintendo, because the whole industry tries to ignore them but is then baffled when they again have the most success. Level 5 did it with Layton and they had insta success. (Too bad they're now milking it to death)

That's not quite true. Rare and Clover Studio had a pretty similar vision about games to Nintendo. Unfortunately both are now either defunct or barely their former self.
The old franchises should always be available, andnew sequals developedfor them because there will always be new gamers that will need to experience them. However, I do not have a problem with new franchises.:)

^This thread should have ended right here. Truth is that Nintendo has made more than its fair share of new IPs this gen. Granted, one can make the argument that none of the aforementioned names are as big as Nintendo's top brands, but that does nothing to dismiss the facts. And bob_newman's not even bringing the whole Wii-brand games into the mix, as that would pretty much void the OP's point instantly.
You also can't go around complaining about Nintendo [not] making new franchises and then turn around and gripe about a handful of established IPs not showing up, as if that helps drive a point at all. If you want the likes of Pikmin (which is the only noteworthy new IP Nintendo made last gen), StarFox, and F-Zero, that's fine in its own right, but it takes away any kind of legitimate logic behind the original point at hand. Not to mention that those franchises really aren't much more relevant than the numerous new IPs that Nintendo has come up with. The only thing that separates Pikmin from most of Nintendo's more recent new IPs is that it has had a couple of games and a few more years to find a cult following of sorts than the rest of the group.
They need a new BIG CORE franchise. Meaning another title that can fit in with Metroid, Zelda, Mario, and that kinda thing. They put out a decent amount of new stuff but it is all Mii this or that, or something in Japan only, or whatever. I would love to see a new action RPG from Nintendo, or something like that. Or maybe a new FPS spy game like Perfect Dark and GOldeneye, but with a twist and done superb.

It's as much a Nintendo game as a Retro/Rare game is. Just not internally developed.
As others have stated, Nintendo created a fair share of new franchises. Unfortunately, they seem to get overlooked by the core audience.

Xenoblade isnt an Action RPG though. It is a RTWP (real time with pause) RPG with heavy MMO influences like Dragon Age Origins. Except that unlike Dragon Age: Origins the combat doesnt completely suck. Combat is made a lot more interesting with character morale, foresight and a party guage which allows your party members to rezz eachother and combine attacks.

If the intellectual property rights to the game are owned by Nintendo (which is the case with 99.99% of titles published by Nintendo), it's as much a Nintendo game as Mario is.[QUOTE="NaveedLife"][QUOTE="wiifan001"] Xenoblade.

If Xenoblade is as good as Baten Kaitos 1 and 2, they might become one of my favorite devs and have the most anticipated WiiU game for me. Not only that, but it would be a great reason already to buy a WiiU. BTW that art kinda looks like it could be Baten Kaitos related. It looks a lot like BK, but then again it might just be their sty1e.

Just pointing out similarities?

Baten Kaitos is apparently still a Namco-Bandai IP- http://www.trademarkia.com/baten-kaitos-76413946.html http://www.trademarkia.com/baten-kaitos-origins-76662310.html The series will be dead until NBGI sells it to Nintendo or they helm another developer to produce another game. But they flopped sales-wise, so the series is obviously dead.[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]^ castlevania? megaman X?NaveedLife

yes i'm pointing out the similarities, i'm not dumb lol :P but that "castle floating on top of a giant spire with a city below and the top of a cliff on the foreground" picture is very castlevania-ish :PNintendo doesn't need new franchises so much as it needs to make use of the ones it has. The Wii's about to be laid to rest, and it never saw an F-Zero, a Star Fox, a Wave Race, a Pikmin, or a Pilotwings. We haven't seen a true sequel to Excitebike 64, and the the Wii's Animal Crossing was just a port with a few new features.

Exactly. When they'll do a new F-Zero (online enabled and with a track editor of course), Wave Race and Star Fox, we can talk new IPs.
