I agree. The Wii's controller would've made for an intuitive DVD interface. I would like to have one less device plugged into my system. Unfortunately most of the more hardcore fanboys in this forum seem to see the idea of DVD playback on the Wii as the devil's work. :(PikaPichu
It's all costs.
I think in this day and age, everyone has a DVD player. I've seen them as cheap as $20 for some no name, $50 for a name brand.
I mean most people have more than 1 as it is..
It would've been nice, but its not essential.
Nintendo should of sold the Optional DVD Codec Driver/Dongle that they promised, but nooo, enstead we get excuses and then they go and start talking about a DVD-Wii After launch... S0NICRThey started talking about it because they know they can capitalize on all the whiners, "oh why can't the Wii also play dvd?" if i were them I would cash in on people who believe that they need thier sixth dvd player.
One good reason that it doesn't have DVD playback functionality is that it means there's going to be less wear and tear on the system. If you wear out a standalone DVD player, it's not a big deal; go out and get a new DVD player for $100 or less. If your Wii poops out, you're going to have to track down a Wii, then shell out the $250 for it. And with the internal memory and everything, you're probably going to be out any Virtual Console games you downloaded and your gave saves.jeordie015Yeah game consoles and dvd really don't mix well, one or both usually end up taking a beating. I mean take the PS2, especially the early models, they demolish dvd.
Not really a missed opportunity since by now DVD is the standard format to play video which I think most people have more than one or two in their homes. No point to it, just and added feature for those who are lazy to use their dvd player that plays dvds....WR_Platinum
a DVD player is 20 bucks
that brings the total cost of the system to 270.
does that put it into perspective for you?

The Wii games are on DVD disc I'm pretty sure all Nintendo would have to do is make a firmware update available for download, no stupid add ons neededspendinbig
It's not a software problem. It's a hardware problem. A firmware can't resolve this problem. Unless, you'll import the Wii Panasonic Q in Japan. You won't see this thing in North America.

S0NICRnot nintendos fault.... sonic-sumthen, who was makeing the DVD playback thingy didn't agree to it in time. therefore, they ARE making a wii that will play dvd's. I jus dunno where its comeing... i heard only japan, i heard japan and the americas... i dunno...
Is it possible to make the Wii able to play DVDs through an update? Is anyone tech savy here?helium_flashAnd no. it was said by a IGN post or something. it was in an older thread... i dun remember what one/ for it was weeks ago.
Wii doesn't support DVD, blah, blah, blah...who cares? I think I have seven machines capable of playing DVDs in my house. I don't want to pay any extra for DVD support when I don't need it. It's a game system, people. I don't need it to play DVDs, pretend to be a PC, perform a tiresome role as a half-ass stereo, wash my dishes, etc., etc.weisguy119I think thats why nintendo has waited, or sonic studios ( i think thats the DVD playback thingy ) took a while to agree to let nintendo use their product... so... yea... besides. i highly doubt nintendo is going to care enough about NA to give us that version...

You do know that firmware is a combination of the 2, it's not just software. Is it possible to make the Wii able to play DVDs through an update? Is anyone tech savy here?helium_flashThe XBOX 360 has proven that you can greatly upgrade a console via downloadable updates. I'm fairly sure it's possible if the Wii drive is in fact a DVD drive which is locked out by coding, then yes, it is most definitely possible.
[QUOTE="videogameplaya2"]The wii is made for gamestomarlynThe internet, news, weather and photo channels disagree. Finally, somebody with enough sense to realize that Nintendo isn't just focusing on games or something innovative.
