This is straight from the VP of marketing

Harrison also brushed off the main criticism of the Wii--namely, that its processing and graphics power are low when compared to its rivals. "We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to,'' he said, also shooting down speculation that a technically upgraded Wii would be launched any time soon. "We're going to start work on future technology only when we believe it's necessary," he said.

There ya go, no upgraded Wii

if they recently realeased a upgraded wii id shoot myself (not literally) cus like i jus bought one not long ago and that would make me feel like i own the bottom of the food chain console. thats sorta wat happened with the ds and the lite version, but their released dates were reasonably distant. they shouldnt release and upgraded wii until like 4 years after this one...at the least.

Seems to me he's talking about not upgrading the Wii in terms og processing power and other things to beef it up as a gaming console. That doesn't mean that they won't release one later down the road in different colors that plays DVDs. In fact, I think those are already scheduled for release in Japan. Personally, I would consider a Wii with DVD playback an upgrade.

The atricle specifically mentions GPU and CPU power in terms of upgrades. Nintendo spoke of possiby making a dvd attachment or upgrade shortly before the release of the Wii however. So the dvd thing would and should not be a suprise to anyone.

You do realize that the Wii's HD capabilities are software and not hardware.  If nintendo wanted to they could just do a firmware update to allow devs to use HD resolutions.

Absolutely right. But I'm replying to the topic, not the article. Basically, the OP is saying "SHUT UP ABOUT UPGRADED WII'S IT'S NOT HAPPENING!!", which isn't entirely true because they will be "upgraded" with DVD playback.

Also, the person that posted before me compared it to what happened with the DS and DS Lite, and that's exactly what's going on. No, it won't be "upgraded" in terms of gaming or graphics processing, but there will be different colors with at least one new feature.

It doesnt have the harware to support that kind of load though.

It's the opposite. It's a hardware problem not a software problem. The next console of Nintendo will be HD. I can see the new console being released in 2010-2011.

By the way, the CRTC announced the same thing like the FCC did for the analog to digital thing. It will be in 2011.

Well.. he said that they aren't going to work on future technology if it isn't needed.. Which means they still might if they need to.. Which means that the rumour will probably not end yet.

DVD ability is not an upgrade. So far it's only in Japan and really if the ability to play DVD's is considered an upgrade that this has to be the year 1999 since it hasn't been important for the last half decade at least.

Upgrade means beef up the system whch you will never seeÂ
