They've been discontinued, so I would have to shell out a ton of money for something that "was" like $30.

Those things were pieces of crap, that is why they were discontinued. And yes, you need to have a wi-fi access point in order to play online. If you don't have a wi-fi network in your own house, a lot of businesses offer free-wi-fi these days such as Borders and Starbucks.

No one's asking if you need a Wi-fi access point to play online. The TC is asking if he can still use his DS online without downgrading his security to WEP on his router. And as for the answer, none that I know of.

You can still use the browser and dsi shop with the wpa, you just can't play games online. So for now the answer yes, you have to downgrade to wep to play online.

No, no way to play without using WEP. I still stand by WEP being about as effective as a paper condom. I don't play DS games online because of their backwards security standards. You'd think that more recent games could support WPA if they wanted to, though, but either the developers don't bother coding for it or Nintendo is locking something off.

Lol that's nintendo for you, loving to hold technology back. Wii, DS. fail

Whenever someone wants to use a DS here, I just create a temporary ad-hoc connection from my laptop, works but is so dumb.

0_0 did you even read the dang topic ... hes talking about WPA security and the fact that the DS still doesnt support it but instead requires the user to use a highly crappy WEP 64 or 128 bit security line .... something that even a noob cracker can break in minutes. And the reason its still WEP is not the devs fault. Its hardcoded onto the DS firmware (not per game cart)... something which cant be changed in the older models of DS but the newer ones it can.

The DSi supports WPA. However regular DS games can still only be played with WEP.
