The Independent Display (iD) is a portable device that can be attached to the NX controller for added functionality.

When attached it expands the experience by showing useful system and account information in real-time. When detached it becomes its own independent pedometer and entertainment device that leverage its mobility in fun ways.

The iD is an optional peripheral and is not needed to play games on the NX.

Key functionality whilst playing NX:

• Accessing OS software such as Miiverse whilst playing a game to get the lowdown on that level you’ve been struggling with, or simply use the iD for viewing the profiles of friends and other players • Knowing when friends are online, then joining or inviting them in-game • Managing friend requests, messages and other notifications on the fly without having to exit out of the current experience • Typing messages and browsing the web with the soft-keyboard• Adjusting the controller settings or updating the system preferences and connections. AND MUCH MORE

Key functionality whilst on the go:

• Pedometer for counting steps that can be exchanged for My Nintendo Points • Streetpass other iD and 3DS system owners that you can now meet in Mii Plaza for interactive fun and friendships • Play dedicated and adapted iD games or download compatible mini-games from a full NX game that has ‘on-the-go’ features • Attach to an armband, a wristband or lanyard to use as a smartwatch that can pair with your mobile phone for screening phone calls, messages and notifications • Shoot photos and videos with the built-in camera. AND MUCH MORE

You don't actually have to own an NX to own the iD, it's a completely independent device (maybe a 3rd pillar and could tie in with the QoL initiative...?). I see young people using it like an iPod touch or parents buying it for their children as an alternative to an expensive smartphone. I see young adults and professionals using it as a sort of smartwatch+, similar to this idea, but slightly smaller. It'll have its own exclusive library of mini-games/apps that are purchase via the iD App Store, which warrants it as a stand alone product.

The NX could have a two bundles; one that includes an iD and one without for the price conscious customer who can later purchase an iD separately for around 99USD

One more thing I forgot to mention is that the iD connects to the controller and is held in place via magnets strong enough to keep it in place, even with rough use. Simply place it in the indent of the controller, it'll sit slightly above the surface for ease of removal. And if you don't own an iD each controller comes with a stylish cover plate that sits flush within the indent.

Wow... I bet this is it. This goes in line with a lot of the rumors, and second screen functionality.

To be honest, I dont see how this add a better game experience. Why would i want to carry this "ID" device around, when i already have a smart phone? The smart watch market isn't exactly on fire. Secondly, it seems to seriously lack features. Gaming fans, don't want to use their gaming device as a pedometer and when that's a main feature, that's an issue. I'm also just curious how this will be executed. Like what features could i do on the GO in games like Zelda/Mario/Metroid, Etc. Don't see how 3rd party developers would utilize this either.

I could be thinking inside the box, but i don't see this as the home run Nintendo wants/needs to have.

Wow, I LOVE it! I love the button layout and it has a touchscreen. If this is what the NX is I am relieved. I would buy an iD for my daughter, wife, and self. I hope this one is the real deal.

I like it! It looks very "Nintendo" and doesn't abandon the Wii U gimmick which IMO was not bad at all except for the gamepads batrery life.

Plus... If Nintendo had a hard time marketing and explaining to the public what the Wii U gamepad is... they have their work cut out for them on this system. You have a whole new console, plus the "ID" having different functionality when it's docked vs. mobile. Supposed all these devices are going to inter-react with each other and mobile. Not to mention the new nintendo account system in which games are all supposed to be sharable. Assuming they present the NX at TGS in Sept 16, and actually releasing in March 17 that is a fairly short window with a lot of change.

The only bright side i see to this from my perspective, is that it's going to be cheaper than a power console + a power Mobile console hybrid. It doesn't seem like this product would replace the 3DS. Which makes me wonder what their strategy for replacing the 3DS will be.

This is very interesting to me.

@The-Butcher248:Well I don't think this is exactly what NX will be, if it were an optional peripheral like this, is doesn't really need to be explained. The base console could sell on its own for those that are not in the know and for those that are(namely the major gaming audience) could pick up the whole package. Everyone else through the system could learn about it more slowly, so everything isn't thrown at them at once. If Nintendo does go with the hybrid, it wouldn't be a bad idea to split it up like that --if that's a possibility.

This is just a concept by the OP, but it really looks like something Nintendo would do. The controller looks familiar and unique at the same time. These graphic design people have amazing skills.

The detachable unit seems pretty pointless. It's basically a poor man's smart phone. I mean, why make this device when you can replicate the functionality on smart phones, something that people are actually willing to carry around? With Nintendo's recent mobile initiative, I can't imagine they'd go the route of making a poor man's mobile unit.

In saying that, I do think it's creative idea, and not completely far-fetched.

@trugs26: It is one of the most normal looking controller designs of all of the fakes so far, and a more attractive looking one than some of the patents we have seen. We don't have anything official from Nintendo about what the NX controller looks like. The Wii U Gamepad could be the last home console controller with a touch screen right? I am really behind the times because I just have an ordinary cell phone without a pedometer. I am picturing the iD being no larger than 1"x3" making it very portable, but the screen being kind of small for gaming on the go.

If they did do the hybrid thing, I could see them going with something on the controller that is detachable, but my guess is it would have buttons.

I think this is just a concept made by the original poster, but it was so good that it fooled me at a glance. When I saw it I thought yeah this looks like the real deal. Then I Googled "Jade Doel" and found her graphic design website. I don't think this is the real deal, but I could see Nintendo doing something like this. After this concept I had decided not to be so gullible, and to just be patient until Nintendo reveals the real console.
