The Independent Display (iD) is a portable device that can be attached to the NX controller for added functionality.
When attached it expands the experience by showing useful system and account information in real-time. When detached it becomes its own independent pedometer and entertainment device that leverage its mobility in fun ways.
The iD is an optional peripheral and is not needed to play games on the NX.
Key functionality whilst playing NX:
• Accessing OS software such as Miiverse whilst playing a game to get the lowdown on that level you’ve been struggling with, or simply use the iD for viewing the profiles of friends and other players • Knowing when friends are online, then joining or inviting them in-game • Managing friend requests, messages and other notifications on the fly without having to exit out of the current experience • Typing messages and browsing the web with the soft-keyboard• Adjusting the controller settings or updating the system preferences and connections. AND MUCH MORE
Key functionality whilst on the go:
• Pedometer for counting steps that can be exchanged for My Nintendo Points • Streetpass other iD and 3DS system owners that you can now meet in Mii Plaza for interactive fun and friendships • Play dedicated and adapted iD games or download compatible mini-games from a full NX game that has ‘on-the-go’ features • Attach to an armband, a wristband or lanyard to use as a smartwatch that can pair with your mobile phone for screening phone calls, messages and notifications • Shoot photos and videos with the built-in camera. AND MUCH MORE
You don't actually have to own an NX to own the iD, it's a completely independent device (maybe a 3rd pillar and could tie in with the QoL initiative...?). I see young people using it like an iPod touch or parents buying it for their children as an alternative to an expensive smartphone. I see young adults and professionals using it as a sort of smartwatch+, similar to this idea, but slightly smaller. It'll have its own exclusive library of mini-games/apps that are purchase via the iD App Store, which warrants it as a stand alone product.
The NX could have a two bundles; one that includes an iD and one without for the price conscious customer who can later purchase an iD separately for around 99USD
One more thing I forgot to mention is that the iD connects to the controller and is held in place via magnets strong enough to keep it in place, even with rough use. Simply place it in the indent of the controller, it'll sit slightly above the surface for ease of removal. And if you don't own an iD each controller comes with a stylish cover plate that sits flush within the indent.
