I haven't played it either. But the thing is that a game doesn't need to have a whole lot of fans in order to be great. There are those games which don't get the attention that it deserves. The people who did play this game say that it's a great game.
It was good, but it is also on the verge of being seriously over rated. It was graphically impressive and innovative at the time, but it wasn't a massive success and I don't think it even had critical success either. It's one of those games that people are looking fondly back upon but it may be more nostaligia than actual memories of a great game. It wouldn't surprise me if many people hyping this new version never even played or owned the old version.
I'm looking forward to the Wii version. However, I'm not about to hype it at all.
I never owned the Saturn, but our Target had a Kiosk set up for about two years with Nights. I never got past level 2, but i loved how easy it was to move around and pick up gems on the overworld and in the air. I think the analog thumbstick was introduced because SeGa wanted more people to enjoy this game.
The nostalgia of Nights is that for a lot of people, it was their first true 3D game. And this was back in 1994 have you. So the Nintendo nerds would have to wait a whole 2 more years before they understood 3D with Mario 64 while I had no problem adjusting because I knew how to walk and fly in a huge overworld. Also, this game is getting mentioned a lot because Super Mario Galaxy looks almost exactly the same with his flying around globular worlds. The only difference is that Mario is on a set path, Nights was on rails.
I do hope that clarified something.
The game was actually very much liked by the critics, but you'll have a problem trying to find reviews from 1996 as there just weren't a lot of review sites back then. http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/198201.asp
On a personal note, NiGHTS was the game that got me back into console gaming. I lost interest in high school. I was mostly a PC girl then. When I got a used Saturn in 1999 for a friend's birthday, I decided to test it out using NiGHTS. Needless to say, it evoked an emotional response in me that I hadn't felt in quite some time. I kept the Saturn, and I've pretty much been a console girl ever since.

I am for certain that the game was NOT released in 1994 as the Saturn was not out then. But still, NIGHTS is on everyone's list of the best Sega Saturn games of all time.
It had MASSIVE critical success and is generally accepted as better than Sonic by critics. It was good, but it is also on the verge of being seriously over rated. I bought a Saturn when it was $425 dollars(suprise launch). Back then atleast I wanted all the systems because I didnt like missing out on games. The saturn had alot of games that were great but nobody got to play them. Nights being one of these games and I'm pretty sure the deluxe package included the first Dual analog stick of its kind. It was a great game along with others like Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon(shooter), Daytona USA. Most people werent to keen on buying a system were the really good games didnt come out until mid-late lifespan. The Saturn was a godsend for anybody that was into 2D fighters and an importer... the RAM cartidge made the capcom vs. series perfection at home. But anyways, theres my little history lesson... I need to stop before I go on about Return Fire for 3DO and AvP/Cannon Fodder for Atari Jaguar.
I wanna know what you did in the game. What was the gameplay like (platformer, action-adventure) and what were the objectives (collect-a-thon, rescue the princess)?helium_flash
The game was ahead of its time and very miyamoto like, just think on the lines of Wii gameplay(controller) back in 1996. On the Wii expanding upon what it had back then could be huge.

2D fighting games on the Saturn w/the RAM cartridge was the best. I can tell that you have been around gaming for many many years.
You have to be very patient to collect the orbs. You must pass huge rings and make some acrobatics move to collect them. Before you finish the levels, you'll have to fight some bosses.
Here's a video that I found on youtube. It's the trailer of the original Nights before its release: http://youtube.com/watch?v=q3XPHfcMy_E
