The controller isn't totally portable, it's being streamed from the Console to the controller, im sure there is a limit on how far it streams.
No the Wii is very dated compared to the other consoles so its time for Nintendo to step up and show what they can do. Also don't worry about the DS, Nintendo are smart enough and experienced enough not to kill off one of there best selling consoles of all time.
It feels like it is to me because I didn't buy a Wii until Q3 last year, and I'd like a steady stream of games I'm interested in to come out for it. But I understand it's my own fault for not getting one until so late, so I understand that it's time to move on. I plan on enjoying the back catalogue as much as I can though, but you know Nintendo consoles, their rare games are very expensive and can be hard to find. That's the only problem.
I predict that it will have moderate support until atleast the end of next year. The DS certainly isn't at its height right now, but notice how they did not drop all support for it yet. Even if they only went until Cafe comes out, that is still a good year away, and Nintendo seems to have been pretty secretive with their projects up until release recently.
Yeah it seems as if the controller is away from the console it will stop working. It's possible they'll include some memory and processing power but if it can be portable don't expect anything big. Probably just a portable mini game or at most NES games. The controller isn't totally portable, it's being streamed from the Console to the controller, im sure there is a limit on how far it streams.

I do agree we need longer console life spans.I have all 3 consoles and i really don't wanna think of the next Xbox or Playstation right now..But truthfully those consoles, particularly PS3, were built to last 10yrs.I don't mind the new Wii coming soon tho, its time for it, but i wouldnt mind waiting till 2013 :P
