I don't know which way to put it. Today my friend knocked over my Wii while it was standing, playing a gamecube game so, i decided to put it on its side, and i removed the covers (doesn't look too bad). On WiiConnect24 the hot side is the left side, which is the side it laying on. Some people say thats bad, it makes the Wii overheat. in vertical position, the bottom intake vent is covered, which, also, people say make the Wii overheat. It seems i don't know what to do. I like to leave my Wii on Connect24, so the vertical position would be best i guess because the fans are not in use? I want to keep it on it's side and ive been reading it gets pretty hot that way. Does anyone know for sure what way would be the best? I bet many people have had their Wii's overeheat and i would like to hear from them and see what they think.

Mine has never overheated, but in the vertical position the fan isnt blocked, and nothing should be blocked in the horizontal position. So it may just be a bad Wii, you should call tech support, and get thier say on it.

The major overheating problems people are having are because of defective consols. People are paranoid that there's will overheat so they are saying which way is better but I dont think it matters. I have mine vertical right now. but if you put something under it while horizantle to keep a space between it and the ground (for air flow) it will be fine. Even without the space I think you'll be fine, but I hold no responsibility if it does overheat or break/get damaged because of any of this.

I've never even heard of any Wiis overheating. I have mine standing vertically on top of my TV (its a rear projection screen.) so Its never been an issue for me.

good point. I alrady had my Wii returned because of read disk errors, so i guess im a little paranoid. If my Wii shows artifacts (sign of overheating) then i'll just send it back, but last time i did that, i couldn't edit my Miis :(. Wii sports is stupid cause you can't change the mii, only the profile, same with Everybody Votes channel. BTW i hope nintendo releases a new channel soon.

saying that Wii's "Never" overheat is a pretty bold statement. everything is bound to get a little too hot here and there. look how small the thing is.

Wiis DO overheat. My first Wii overheated and caused graphical corruption, so i sent it back to Nintendo. They sent me a brand new Wii console. The second console also overheated and caused graphical corruption, so i sent it back to Nintendo. They sent me a second brand new Wii console. I left WiiConnect24 running all of the time on the first two consoles. I turned WiiConnect24 off on my third console. My third console has not overheated. You do the math.

I will say, I do not play my Wii everyday. Sometimes I will go a week without playing it due to work and family. This may be why WiiConnect24 caused problems with my first two consoles. Because I left them in standby mode, the fans did not run for long periods of time. Also, just for the record, all of my Wii consoles have been placed in the Vertical position.

Don't play any Russian Roulette then, my friend, because you're incredibly unlucky. I've had my Wii since the US launch. I've left in on for days in a row running a game, I've left in WC24 mode for days, I've had it vertical, horizontal, on the stand, off the stand. And I've never had a single problem with my Wii. I know others who have had their Wiis since last year as well, and they've never had any problems either.

I've said it before, and I'll most likely have to say it again -- the average Wii does not get any hotter than your standard laptop.

It always comes down to this. I'm going to go out and say it, but i think all Wiis have a problem. Let's say you leave WiiConnect24 on for a month (without turning it on) i bet anyone's Wii would suffer ffrom overheating. The thing is, many more people are likely to have problems. Like SamhainX said, he had two Wiis with both the same problem, i also heard a story about another guy who went through two Wiis. I think that Nintendo should go out and realease a patch that makes the fan come on for like 15 minutes every 2 hours or something (can that be done)?

OK I've decided I'll leave on WiiConnect24 but not if i'm going away for over 3 days.BTW does anyone know why the Wii makes a noise (when you don't have a CD in it) of receiving a CD when you turn it on or off? Like, "wuhhhh... waahhhh," kinda noise, lol. But when you have a CD in it, it doesn't make that noise. It's almost as though it wants a CD out even though its not in and when a CD is in, it doesn't want to take it out. o.0

My Wii has never overheated. I have it stand vertically. Most Wiis overheat due to WiiConnect24 though, not the way it stands. I notice that as the day goes on, my Wii gets hotter and when I get up in the morning, my Wii is room temperature. This is because my Wifi is only on when I'm awake. It doesn't have much to do with which way the Wii is standing to my knowledge.

My guess for the noise is that the algorithm for turning on the system is the same regardless of how you turn it on (by pressing the power button or by inserting a game). That way, the system doesn't have to differentiate between the two.

I've left my Wii in standby for a month straight. Left it at home for a month when I went back to college (last time it's been off that long). It's standing vertically, without the stand as of now. It's got about 2 inches room on what would be the bottom (if it were seated horiontal) to the side of the cabinet, and less than a quarter of an inch from what would be the top of the system from the TV. There are about 8 inches between the back of the system and the wall, and it sits on a woven yarn tablecloth. All of that, and no problems. It's never overheated, it's never had any problems; it's gotten warm, but never to the point of explosion or burning my hand.

good point about the system not having to differentiate between ways of turning on, still don't know why it makes the noise when you turn it off on WiiConnect24. When you say you left the Wii on standby, do you mean standby, or standby with Wii Connect24? I think you mean the second one. If so, did you check your Wii for graphical errors such as random small arifacts or pixels on the screen that are green or black?

Yeah, it's still on WC24 mode - I've never shut it off.

And yeah, never had any problems with games, heat, or graphical errors.

Healthy Wiis don't overheat. I don't leave WiiConnect on, though, because it adds to the heat in my room which is counterproductive to my AC.

Mine overheated standing vertically. WiiConnect24 just makes the Wii get way too hot, so after a couple weeks without the fans kicking in, it is permanently damaged. If you play the Wii every week or so, there should be no problems. But if you leave the Wii alone with WC24 on for weeks at a time, you're pushing your luck.

I bet many people have had their Wii's overeheat and i would like to hear from them and see what they think.theweakbear

I just have to say this. If my friend knocked over my Wii while it was standing, I'd knock him over :)

I use my Wii all the time, and I leave it on overnight some times (with games like twilight princess and red steel on). Nope, no overheat. Mine is on a carpet too, in vertical position.
