I read the article on IGN and saw them say this about Paper Mario 3DS.

"From what we can gather, the series seems headed to a more platform/action-oriented style of play versus the turn-based gameplay of its predecessors."

I REALLY hope its an open world RPG with badges and such like the first two. I thought it was, from the bits of footage shown, but IGN acts like its not. Anyone able to clarify this?

I saw battles in the videos and screenshots I've seen. IGN doesn't know what they're talking about.

If anything the trailers give an indication that it's back to it's RPG roots after Super Paper Mario.

I'd get it even if it wasn't though; that battle system looks too interesting to pass up

Paper Mario has never been a true RPG. It has always been an action/adventure game just like the majority of Japanese RPGs on the market.

I think they were talking about how the overworld itself seems to employ more platforming elements than previous PMs. It's clear that the battle system will be more like the first two in the series. Seeing the videos, it's obvious the battles are more like that.

The mention the action/platforming increase in a direct comparison to turn-based gameplay. Nothing more than the battles were ever turn-based, so IGN really doesn't know what they're talking about. If anything, this is technically a move in the opposite direction because Super Paper Mario, the last entry in the series, was a full action/platformer. Their description is really misleading, so try not to worry too much about it. As someone who's played all the Paper Mario games to death, this one is looking pretty solid so far and should definitly be a step up from Super Paper Mario.

Right, which is fine, and could even be great, I just hope that it has an open world with badges, leveling, and sidequests like the first 2. I love those games so much, among the best RPG's IMO.

I have always viewed paper mario as an Platforming RPG. Though to me, Super Paper Mario was really just Platforming. This looks like it will be more like the first two which to me is good. I'm excited for this game.

I hope its not true, its why I didn't like Super Paper Mario as much as TTYD. Mario has enough platformers already with SMG1 + SMG2 + NSMB DS/Wii and the upcoming SM3DL. A Paper Mario RPG should stay an RPG with its platforming/timing elements that affect the turn-based battles, badges and puzzles in 3D. I don't think anyone here is looking for another Super Paper Mario as opposed to TTYD in 3D.

There has been absolutely nothing shown from that game to indicate that it is anything other than a turn-based RPG... I have no idea what they are talking about... Even if they have seen more than we have, how exactly do you explain the trailers that you know.. SHOWED TURN BASED BATTLES HAPPENING.
