I recently got my DS, and I've been pondering additional games to add to my "collection" (if you can call two games that).

Anyway, a game on the tip of many people's tongues appears to be Pheonix Wright, so I gave the gamespot review a onceover.

It appears that the game is "sometimes linear", does this imply that the game doesn't let YOU solve the case, but you're really just reading a story?

Please tell me that I take the role of the attorney and I'm the one coming up with facts to defend my client.

While I don't own this game for DS because I'm too lazy to look for it, I play it on me cell phone. Yes it does let you solve the case on your own. You are the one who has to find contradictions in the testimonies of witnesses and provide evidence in order to SLAM EDGEWORTH IN THE FACE.!!!

Yeah now that you put it that way it is kind of like that.  Don't let that prevent you from buying it though because it's one of my favorite games of all time.

I really like it.  It's linear in terms of gathering evidence and then going to court, but other than that each story/chapter is different and the next is longer than the one before.  It'll last you a looooong time, I got it summer 06 and i'm still not finished with my first time through.  I highly recommend this game to anyone

As stated you pretty much gather the right clues to progress, once that's done you go to court.
In courst you listen to testimony, find the faults in the case. Point them out and provide evidance why it's false. If you get it wrong you get a strike against you. 5 strikes and your out. That is how the first one plays, the second one I have but have not played yet.

Buy the first one, it's a long game. Keep in mind that it's a lot of reading. If you do like the first one, then get the second one.

it lets you solve the case on your own, but you have to read a lot, so keep that in mind.

Based upon this information...I'm leaning away from this title. I'm searching for games that will challenge me mentally.

In fairness it does challenge you mentally in some ways. In others it's a lesson in frustration when you know the answer and have to try and figure out when you are supposed to exploit it. I love the game but sometimes that part of it grates on my nerves.

Exactly, the game will increase in difficulty as you progress through it, the court and prosecuters will be more hostile to you and if you make a wrong move in a contradiction you'll be penialized. You really ned to read in between the lines in many of the testimonys and find anything that you could that might turn the case around in your favor. I say get it, its a great game that should be in everyones collection.*

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is one of the best DS game I've played. It does have a lot of reading, but it's very fun reading and you will love the characters in the game.

This game is very good and got my girlfriend into gaming. She got addicted to this so much that I had to start playing my psp again as she was hogging the DS. It can be slightly linear, its true, BUT its still a very good game.

Phoenix Wright is a great game but only it is also has a style that will not suit everyone. So consider the pros and cons.

1. It is rather challenging at times trying to figure out what to present or ask and it is also very rewarding when you know exactly how you are going to win the case. The story is great and will keep you interested if you give it a chance.

2. On the other hand, the game is called linear for a very good reason, there is only one way to go through it. After you beat once, there is very little reason to ever play it again. The story will be the same, the choices you make to win will be the same.

I recommend it on the fact that I like games with a good story and the replay factor didn't effect me much because I get hours of gameplay from going through it once.

Yeah, it's an excellent game that will definitely make you think. When Gamespot said that it's linear, they don't mean you don't have to do anything; they mean that there is only one way to pull of a victory, and sometimes, it is very tricky.

Why are you leaning away from this game if you want games that challenge you mentally? You shouldn't be leaning away from this game if you want to be challenged mentally, you should BUY IT RIGHT NOW. Trust me, if you want mental challenges Case 5 will really challenge you.

There are LOT of mental challenges in this... some witnesses are really hard to break. Sometimes the contradictions in their testimony may be as simple as someone saying that they made a phone call even though the power was out, while with others it may so obscure that you have to press them on an issue that they slip up on something and you can catch them in the lie. The first 2 cases in the first game are pretty straight-forward (they even let you know who the real perp is), but it builds up difficulty fast. The 2nd game actually starts with you having amnesia, so you have all of this evidence, and you're in the courtroom, but you have no idea who's who or where the evidence came from. It's twists like this that give each case its own flair and challenge.

The only real negatives are odd leaps in logic being expected, and multiple pieces of evidence that could be used to refute testimony, but the game only considering one of them to be 'correct,' making some parts a guessing game rather than a pure brainpower exercise.

I bought this game and played it for about an hour. This game is all about hitting the "a" button and reading. I would recommend buying an encyclopedia brown book instead.

An encyclopedia is a book that's stuffed with information, and can be useful at times (and interesting) when I'm doing a research project. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a captivating, and endearing Adventure game with witty characters, fun dialogue, and great music (something the Charlie Brown Encyclopedia doesn't have) and an enjoyable game. They are both great things but you're not being very helpful considering how you didn't list all the OTHER things about Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. All that you said, was "you get to press the A Button and read dialogue" but Phoenix Wright is more than that. I recommend you play it more and post something more useful.

Not that I'm defending his viewpoint or anything, but he said buy an "encyclopedia brown" book, not the Charlie Brown Encyclopedia. Big Difference. I loved the Phoenix Wright game but before you try to burn someone else you should realize what they are talking about.
