My $1.23 cents on the subject (adjusting for inflation you know), no matter when you get a system, it will eventaully become obsolete. There's always somthing newer and more powerful on the horizon, but if you spend your time waiting for that, you'll never really get to play what you wanted to play.
If there's a game you want to play, go for it!

while i agree with this statement, for pc hardware, i totally disagree with handhelds (nds series), but yet again agree for the (3ds series).
The dsi and dsi xl, are kinda no upgrades to start with. while they have bigger screens with the lite, the gba game slot gets removed. which is fine if you dont play gba games to start with.
If you wait for a 3DS lite, then yes i agree with your line. once the 3DS lite gets announced big chance when you buy it, 1-2 years later a 3dsi will get released, and you can wait again, and again and again.
But if you wait and buy the first version of 3DS, you are future proof for atleast 6 years, while with buying the DS atm will make your handheld future proof for what a half year? Just buying a DS i wouldn't do it.
Back to the topic starter:
I wont need to pull out in the future a old gameboy advance in order to play the games. I can perfectly play them on the higher res / backlights etc of the ds lite. ( if i do wanna play gba games when 3ds pops up ) i still can use the DS lite for it, with dsi / dsi xl you cant. ( while i can play the DS games on a 3DS anyways ) so basicly the whole dsi xl is garbage when the 3DS gets released.
It would be upgrades if the gba slot still existed in it. I'm from the opinion that a handheld should be backward compatible with the last generation games. the dsi/dsixl dropped it. ( same as the 3DS should be backward compethable with the normal DS range " which it is") .
then the only thing that makes those 2 handhelds comprensate such stuff is bigger screens, while the screens are bigger, the resolution isn't. so if you already irritated yourself on a ds lite on the jiggies / bad graphical quality, it will only be more worse on the dsi/dsi xl ( saw both in action ).
like poeple already stated its a godbless the device "xl" for people that cant see that well, a little screen can be a problem. so the bigger screen can solve there problem. If you can see clearly, a bigger screen ( on the dsi/dsi xl ) with the same resolution = seeying more jiggies / bigger graphical failures.
Now that probably the 3DS gets released at 22th november this year. your whole dsi xl = garbage. the superiour resolution and image quality on the device "3ds" makes the ds games look way better on the 3ds for sure. you will throw the device "dsi xl" into your bookshell and never play on it again. Because it has no use. while with the DS lite you can still use the device to play gba games on a optimal way with.
Buying a dsi / dsi xl isn't a smart move atm ( and never will be, it basicly died when the 3DS got announced ), if you cant wait and just think like a random american ( the bigger must be better, i dont care about money or future perspectives i just wanna play on the biggest thing that is out there now ) its a good match for you.
But if you actually did go to school, or got some common sense, you can clearly see, that the DSi XL isn't a good option to go for. Even if you only need to add a few bucks, you can rather buy a lite or wait for a 3DS to get released.
Smartest set and future proof
Wait, buy a 3DS ( the new games like golden sun etc will be cheaper when the 3DS gets released ). you are not 6 years future proof, you can buy all the nds games you want, because the 3DS is backward competable.
Second smartest set and kinda future proof:
if you really really want a DS now, i would say go for the DS lite, but only if you got some gba games left, which you could want to play with maximal quality in the future.
A not so smart set + no future proof at all, but you wanna play the DS games NOW atm, and you got money enought.
buy a dsi / dsi xl, while its compleetly nothing worth when the 3DS gets released, you will have a good go with it for those few months. but after it the value of the device is back to zero. have fun spending 180 euro on a DSi XL and in a few months you probably want to get your hands on a 3DS which cost you againt probably 200+ euro.
my 50 cents.
