I just got a nintendo DS Lite, i am a HUGE rpg fan and have allready picked up FF IV, and Chrono Trigger. I have never played a Pokemon game before but i see its listed as an RPG and has generally high reviews and was wondering if i should pick it up. I have never played a Pokemon game before and was wondering if it was too childish( not trying to offend anyone) and appealing to someone who has never played a pokemon game before. Thanks in advance.

If you are really into RPGs you should get Dragon Quest IV. Dragon Quest was the series that Final Fantasy copied oh so many years ago. Tis my favourite RPG series for sure.

I love Pokmon, but it doesn't give off an RPG vibe. It feels like something else entirely. It's different.

I would recommend getting Pokemon Fire Red for the GBA, as that is my favorite Pokemon game(the DS can play GBA games). But, if you cannot find it, Pokemon Diamond is a good game, although the Pokemon look a bit less inspired.

well, since you're restricted to DS limitations, i'd say Ruby or Sapphire tbh but had you not been restricted like that, i definitely would have said go find a copy of Yellow. it's like Red and Blue with a Pikachu following you around ^^

They're great, with great replayability. I recommend Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and/or Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (GBA).

If you've never played one do not hesitate to get one. You're lucky, for me it's gotten pretty stale after playing every pokemon game ever made.

FFIII kind of reminded me of Pokemon while I was playing it. I'd recommend firered/leafgreen, 1st generation pokemon were the best.

I think Pokemon is a great series (albeit all the games are basically the same). Watch out though, it can be HIGHLY additive.

If you look with care, there's no other RPG (especially designed for multiplayer confrontantions) with such a deep combat system. People think it is just "leveling up and learning some attacks", but a closer look reveals one of the deepest RPG series ever created. The Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games add a lot more complexity to an already extremely complex game. The Single Player, despite not being that innovative, is still extremely satisfactory. I must say, this is one series you have to play if you have a NIntendo handheld.

i usually ignore EVs (effort value) until i beat the elite 4. then i start my pokemon collection and the ones i want on my team are EV trained

Wow, I'm really don't get why people say the GBA pokemon's are better than the DS ones, and the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games have all the ones from the GBA and the new ones so why do they look a bit less inspired? they are the same, and they are great. Get the game is really good. Other games you should consider are The World Ends With You, Etrian Oddyssey 2 ( it's a real RPG, old school, and hard ) and Children of Mana. They are all great games to me.

I would say give pokemon a try. It's a huge game, and there's tons to do after you beat it. Don't worry about it being too childish. I got into it when I was 26. My girlfriend does call me a nerd for liking it though

Nothing will ever top Pokemon Blue/Red, but all the games have been quite excellent in my opinion. I have never been so anticipated and excited for a game than I was when Gold/Silver were released. That may have been the happiest moment of my childhood (not really...).

Hope you enjoy it! I was actually in grade school when the first pokemon (blue and red) came out and remember picking them up that day from Funcoland. Though I haven't played past Yellow, I can say those games were amazing, and if you have the chance, try out the original Blue and Red. I think you'll love them just as much.
