Can you tell me what types of pokemon I should have on my team for battles? Any previous generations, good attacking team. I am new to this kinda stuff and I understand that the choices are endless, but I am looking for good types in general (fire, grass etc) not specific pokemon.

That's kind of vague. What are you planning to do with the team, in game or wifi battles? The types are pretty balanced so it just depends on the individual Pokemon. I would say that dragon is the best type, ice is the worst (not for attacking obviously) and everything else is pretty even. Even Poison and bug types can be pretty awesome, though poison is an admitedly bad attacking type.

Steel is a good defensive type, and when planning movesets you want to consider the type coverage you get. Attack combinations like Ice Beam/Thunderbolt and Dark Pulse or Shadow Ball and Focus Blast are good because they offer at least neutral attacking types to most Pokemon.

You can always try out the Sand + Jellicent combo.

Which means, you get a tyranitar and Excadrill(with sand rush) combo, with Jellicent to cover up the entire Water + Ghost type weakness. And since this team is weak to Scarfty, go for a Gliscor too, they have amazing Def.
