Hello fellow pokemon fans. After a long hiatus from the pokemon games I have recently picked up my old gameboy and pokemon red version and have been washed over by nostalgia. However, I only played the first generation of pokemon as a kid. So for those of you who stuck with it and have played the new games all the way through I ask you this. Is it worth getting a DS and heartgold to pick up the series again?

The series has gotten a lot better since the original and you have updated versions of those older games at your disposal (may need a GBA port for Ruby/Sapphire). If you have to pick one I'd go with HeartGold as your first pick.

Yes. I've played Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Ruby, Sapphire, I think a little of Emerald and Pearl.

The series honestly peaked with Gold and Silver. So getting the remake would be all the better. I personally took a liking to Silver a bit better, but Gold is almost essentially the same game, just different Pokemon to catch.

Thanks for the advice people. I'll most likely get a dsi xl, I can't resist the call of a bigger screen and I'm just not all that excited about the 3ds.

I was thinking about waiting for black/white, but I haven't played any of the games since red/blue. I feel like I'd be overwhelmed by all the new additions and new pokemon that have been added on since the first games. I had a hard enough time with the 150 original ones haha. That's why I'm leaning towards picking up HG/SS. Although I do have to admit the starter pokemon for the new generation look pretty sweet.

Definitely, seeing as you have only played the 1st generation heartgold would be a great start as its a remake of the 2nd generation. Make sure you get a DS Lite though, then you can buy the 3rd generation ones, ruby or sapphire, then the 4th generation on DS, diamond and pearl. If you plan on going that far that is :P And the 5th generation is due for release march 6th, so you have 3 generations to look forward to until then! :D

If you want to play the game boy advance ones as well as the DS ones, then getting ds lite might be a good idea, since you can transfer game boy advance pokemon to the ds games, I think, using the game boy advance slot.

Black and White will ONLY have 150 pokemon. After you beat the game, all the others will become available. So it won't be overwhelming.

It pretty much been the same as that for a reaallyyy long time. I really suggest getting heartgold or soulsilver before white/black If your played the originals it would be a good idea to get your head back into the games and get used to the mechanics. Getting black or white instead will more or less piss you off, It did it too me on the english rom and ive been playing pokemon since 1996 (: But seriously though, it wouldn't be a good idea to just pick up black or white after years of knowing nothing and soulsilver/heartgold are really amazing. One of the best things about the pokemon series, is even as they become newer, they're still as amazing as the originals, unlike twilight princess and spirit tracks which managed to put me off zelda games for a while.

I'm a big fan of the zelda series as well but I liked TP. I didn't think it was the best of the series but still a fun installment nonetheless. I never got around to playing wind waker though. Anyway, back to pokemans. I probably won't get a DS lite because it just looks so, so small. I don't know how it compares to the GBA in terms of screen size but I feel like I'm always squinting towards my GBA as it is. However, I do know that the DSi XL will dwarf those two in screen size so that's probably what I'll go with. I don't think I'll go back and play every generation of pokemon games anyway. Especially since it looks like there is so much to do in HG/SS. Even if I do feel the urge to play diamond I can always get it for the GBA. I know I won't be able to transfer pokemon from it but that's ok with me. By the time I get around to diamond they'll probably have the remakes out anyway haha

If you're looking to get back into Pokemon, there's no better place to start than either HeartGold or SoulSilver.

Don't bother with Diamond or Pearl but definitely consider Platinum.

If you're not interested in getting the 3DS, the DSiXL is a great choice if you think the Lite will be too small. Heck, if you're really into Pokemon, it's worth picking up the DS just for the Pokemon games alone. :P

yeah definitively you should start with HG/SS series, a great benefit of those two is that u can get almost the 493 pokemon existing so far, so, u can revive those glory days and update yourself with new pokemon, new stuffs, attacks etc.. so go on and play it

btw.. am looking for a SS groudon, do anyone here have one for tradin? if anyone has, please inbox me, thnxs :)

heart gold and soul silver are great. You said that you stopped with red/blue right? well, now you get to play the sequel ... unless you want to ease back in with fire red or leaf green, but you'll have to get a ds lite or acquire it in a differen manner in which i probably cant speak of here.

not sure why icant edit

but

I just got back into pokemon cause i finally bought a ds (i stopped at saphire/ruby and thought they were really mediocre) and i fell in love with heartgold (only now im pissed because i missed the free mew giveaway since i was at a place where the internet just so happened to be too high tech for pokemon for some reason).

anyway, i didnt like platinum much because i was too lazy to learn the new pokemon ( and i generally didnt like the new pokemon anyway) and from the looks of it, that might be the same with black and white, but i did hear that black and white is changing up some stuff, so why not start with heartgold/soul silver to get a taste of the old pokemon formula (supposedly))

I love that HG/SS gives you the ability to obtain almost all 493. That alone seems worth it in replayability then coupled with online play I know I'll have more than enough to entertain myself with. And by the time I get used to some of the new features in gameplay I'll probably be ready to pick up B/W. I'm not terribly interested in emerald or platinum. The starter pokemon in both of those just seem boring to me. Empoleon seems kind of cool but thats it. Black and Whites starters all look really cool along with the rest of the pokedex. Right now I'm just not that interested in the 3DS. The games announced for it don't really draw my attention, and I've heard the release price is going to be at least 250 maybe even 300. I could get a new console and maybe even a few games for that. On top of health warnings saying you can only play for half an hour at a time (which might be a good thing in a way haha) I think I'm going to pass on the 3DS for now. At least until I see a friend with it and decide I have to have one haha.

I've played through all of them (including black and white) and Crystal is still boss.
